It leaves the asset manager with 8.6% of Sphere\u2019s Class A shares, down from 11.1%; Ariel still ranks as the third largest institutional holder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSphere\u2019s shares have been on a tear, up 42% year-to-date and 455% from its 2025 April low, when leisure stocks were dragged down by an escalating trade war, and Sphere faced potential bankruptcy for its MSG Networks division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMSG Networks and its lenders ultimately completed a debt restructuring that had lenders forgo $514 million of the original $804 million in debt. Sphere has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/finance\/2026\/sphere-beats-earnings-forecast-high-stock-1234891889\/\">crushed earnings<\/a> estimates in recent quarters, fueled by its latest Sphere Experience hit, <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>. The reimagined 1939 film classic, which hit Sphere\u2019s screens in August 2025, generated more than $260 million in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/commerce\/2026\/sphere-wizard-of-oz-tickets-dc-venue-1234881781\/\">ticket sales<\/a> during its first five months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSphere Entertainment has also made progress this year on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/james-dolan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_james-dolan_1\" data-tag=\"james-dolan\">James Dolan<\/a>\u2019s vision for a global network of Sphere venues. In January, it announced plans for its second U.S.-based venue located in Maryland\u2019s National Harbor, 15 minutes south of Washington, D.C. It will be a smaller-scale Sphere with a capacity of 6,000 seats. The Vegas Sphere has 17,600 seats and can hold up to 20,000 people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis week, Sphere revealed its Abu Dhabi venue will be at Yas Island next to SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. The Department of Culture and Tourism\u2013Abu Dhabi is funding construction of the 20,000-seat venue that is expected to cost $1.7 billion and be completed by the end of 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAriel is not the only institution cutting back on its Sphere exposure. The hedge fund of New York Mets owner <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/steve-cohen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_steve-cohen_1\" data-tag=\"steve-cohen\">Steve Cohen<\/a>, Points72 Asset Management, sold almost its entire position in Sphere\u00a0Entertainment as the stock soared last year. Cohen\u2019s fund unloaded 1.3 million shares, or 85% of its stake, over the six months ending Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAriel still maintains large exposure to the sports industry, including fellow Dolan-controlled companies Madison Square Garden Sports and Madison Square Garden Entertainment. \u201cWe have a lot of confidence in Jim Dolan,\u201d John Miller, portfolio manager at Ariel, told <em>Sportico<\/em> in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/basketball\/2024\/knicks-rangers-playoffs-wall-street-buy-msg-1234778530\/\">2024 video interview<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cHe has done really well over the decades to enhance shareholder value. He\u2019s a terrific visionary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe firm, which has $14 billion in assets under management, is the largest institutional holder of Manchester United with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/finance\/2026\/big-manchester-united-shareholder-cuts-stake-again-1234880224\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9 million shares<\/a>, representing a roughly 5% stake. Ariel also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/finance\/2026\/ariels-project-level-1-billion-womens-sports-1234887389\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched a new fund<\/a>, Project Level, focused on women\u2019s sports. Its first $250 million close was in February, and it is ultimately targeting $1 billion. Project Level has so far invested in the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/soccer\/2026\/denver-summit-nwsl-origins-1234886705\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NWSL\u2019s\u00a0Denver Summit FC<\/a>, League One\u00a0Volleyball (LOVB) and the new NFL-backed flag football league.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAriel did not immediately respond to a request to comment on the Sphere share sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMellody Hobson and John Rogers are co-CEOs of Ariel.
