Among these works is a unique type of print called a counterproof, produced\u00a0 by dampening a pastel drawing and pressing it on to another piece of paper, allowing the\u00a0 transfer of pigment to create a mirror image. To\u00a0 achieve this aim, they often created sets and employed human models to compose\u00a0 scenes, as if staging a play. This produced collaborative relationships with dancers, actors,\u00a0 and filmmakers. When Pictorialists left their studios, nature and the city became other\u00a0 sites for dramas. They used innovative printing and editing techniques such as soft focus\u00a0 and shadow to evoke the pastoral, the poetic, and later, the abstract. It understands the spiritual and material worlds as\u00a0 intertwined rather than opposed, drawing from Indigenous traditions and beliefs as well as\u00a0the legacies of Spanish literature. Drawing\u00a0 on embedded histories while reshaping them for the present, these works function like\u00a0 visual remixes\u2014layered, improvisational, and deeply connected.
