The name\u2019s Bond \u2014 James Bond. That much we know. But who will be the next man behind the famous moniker? According to Amazon MGM Studios, the company that now owns the rights to the Ian Fleming-created character, the casting process has begun.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe search for the next James Bond is underway,\u201d Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement this week<\/a>. \u201cWhile we don\u2019t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we\u2019re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.\u201d<\/p>\n The British secret agent has been portrayed by multiple actors since Sean Connery\u2019s debut in 1962\u2019s Dr. No<\/em>. Most recently, Daniel Craig starred as Bond across five films, beginning with 2006\u2019s Casino Royale<\/em> and ending with 2021\u2019s No Time to Die<\/em>, which saw the death of his version of 007. Now everyone is guessing who could be next, with some actors volunteering to pick up the mantle.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s what we know about the future of Bond \u2014 including who might portray him next.<\/p>\n In February 2025, Amazon MGM Studios reached a deal<\/a> with longtime James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, giving the company creative control over the 007 franchise for the first time. This came four years after Amazon reached a deal to purchase MGM, in part because of the success of the Bond franchise.<\/p>\n Now Amazon MGM Studios is finally making moves to bring a new version of the super spy to life. Director Denis Villeneuve was tapped to helm the next installment of the franchise, with his Dune <\/em>producer, documentary filmmaker Tanya Lapointe, signing on as an executive producer. Amy Pascal, producer of Project Hail Mary,<\/em> and David Heyman, producer of all eight Harry Potter <\/em>films,<\/em> will produce the movie.<\/p>\n Screenwriter Steven Knight \u2014 known for Eastern Promises<\/em>\u00a0 and also co-creating Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?<\/em> \u2014 will write the screenplay.<\/p>\n \u201cIt has always been on my bucket list, and it\u2019s fantastic to be invited to do it,\u201d Knight said in a 2025 interview with BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast<\/a>. \u201dI can\u2019t wait to get started. I\u2019m hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it will be imbued into me and I will be able to produce something that\u2019s the same but different and better, stronger and bolder.\u201d<\/p>\n At CinemaCon in April, Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM\u2019s head of film, praised the creative team, stating that they were \u201csetting the stage for something that\u2019s truly worthy of the Bond legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n The casting of Bond has been very hush-hush, with Variety reporting this week<\/a> that casting director Nina Gold is helping to find the ideal actor to portray the character. Gold is known for casting shows like Game of Thrones <\/em>and The Crown <\/em>as well as films like Conclave <\/em>and Hamnet<\/em>, the latter of which she was nominated for the Academy Awards’ first-ever casting Oscar.<\/p>\n While Bond has been played by a non-star before (George Lazenby, the Australian actor who portrayed Bond in the 1969 film On Her Majesty\u2019s Secret Service<\/em>, had no film experience before becoming 007), it seems like a known actor will likely land the part this time around. In November 2023, Broccoli told Yahoo Entertainment<\/a>, \u201cWe’re totally open to casting a non-star, but acting is a very specialized profession, and if somebody has to carry a movie and have the range of requirements [for Bond] in terms of physicality, it’s not going to be someone who has never done it before.\u201d<\/p>\n For a while, it seemed like any and every charming actor, particularly those who hailed from Britain, were in the mix for the role \u2014 and forced to respond to the rumors. Rege Jean-Paul of Bridgerton<\/em> fame told The Tonight Show<\/em> in 2021<\/a> that speculation around him as the next Bond was \u201clike a merit badge\u201d \u2014 but stopped short of confirming any casting rumors.<\/p>\n Idris Elba, a longtime fan favorite for the part, fueled speculation in December when he posed at a wax museum<\/a> alongside statues of actors who had previously played the role. But it came two years after Elba shut down those very rumors<\/a>, telling reporters at the World Government Summit in 2023, \u201cYou know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with \u2018J\u2019 and ends with \u2018B,\u2019 but I\u2019m not going to be that guy. I\u2019m going to be John Luther. That\u2019s who I am.\u201d And he previously told The Shop <\/em>podcast in 2022 that playing Bond was not a \u201cgoal\u201d of his career.<\/a><\/p>\n At this present moment, it seems like anyone could be Bond \u2014 but there are a few fan favorites. Currently, Eternity <\/em>star Callum Turner is at the top of the list of contenders on betting market Kalshi<\/a>. However, the actor told reporters at the Berlin Film Festival<\/a> that it was \u201ctoo early\u201d for that conversation and that he would not comment on it.<\/p>\n Kalshi also put Euphoria<\/em> actor Jacob Elordi at 19% favored for the role, but thus far, the star, who is from Australia, has yet to comment.<\/p>\n Behind Elordi on Kalshi is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but at the June 2025 premiere of his film 28 Years Later,<\/em> the English actor said he \u201ccan\u2019t talk about\u201d the casting speculation<\/a>. He previously told the magazine Num\u00e9ro<\/a> that it\u2019s \u201ccharming and wonderful that people see me in that role\u201d and that he takes it \u201cas a great compliment.\u201d<\/p>\n Other names that have popped up in the press include Challengers <\/em>star Josh O\u2019Connor, who starred with Craig in the film Wake Up Dead Man<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cI have no thoughts, really,\u201d O\u2019Connor told Deadline<\/a> in January 2025. \u201cThe truth is that \u2026 I think in the space of a week, I made a joke about, wouldn\u2019t it be funny if I played Bond? Then, me and Daniel [Craig] did an \u2018Actors on Actors,\u2019 and then something else happened, and then suddenly I was James Bond. If I am Bond, I don\u2019t know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Spider-Man <\/em>star Tom Holland, who is also rumored to be in the mix, spoke about the casting rumors. He told Gordon Ramsey\u2019s YouTube series Scrambled<\/em><\/a> in August 2025, \u201cI mean, every young British actor, it\u2019s the pinnacle of working in our industry.\u201d Holland is a big fan of the franchise: He told Total Film in 2022 that he pitched an origin story for the character<\/a> to a studio.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Babygirl<\/em> star Harris Dickinson, another British actor thought to be in the running, spoke to a reporter about Bond at Cannes this month, teasing that Wicked<\/em> star Jonathan Bailey would be a great choice<\/a>. Bailey previously told BBC Radio 2\u2019s Breakfast Show in June 2025 that it would be \u201chard to say no\u201d to the role<\/a>.<\/p>\n But ultimately, only one person can say yes \u2014 assuming the offer is on the table.
