NBC is reshuffling part of its primetime lineup for the 2026-27 television season, and one of the network\u2019s biggest franchise moves involves Law & Order<\/em><\/a>. After airing in the Thursday 8 p.m. slot since returning to NBC in 2021, the long-running procedural is moving back to 10 p.m. next fall, while Law & Order: SVU<\/em> stays put at 9 p.m.<\/p>\n According to Deadline<\/em><\/a>, the shift comes as NBC makes room for a broadcast version of Peacock\u2019s breakout reality hit The Traitors<\/em>, which will now open the network\u2019s Thursday lineup.<\/p>\n The updated schedule arrives as NBC continues balancing entertainment programming with an increasingly sports-heavy primetime slate that already includes Sunday Night Football<\/em>, college football, NBA coverage, and, beginning next season, MLB games.<\/p>\n COMPLEX SHOP:<\/b> Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Obsess.<\/a><\/p>\n Despite that, NBC is still expanding its scripted offerings with new dramas Line of Fire<\/em> and The Rockford Files<\/em>, plus comedies Newlyweds<\/em> and Sunset P.I.<\/em> At the same time, the network confirmed cancellations for medical drama Brilliant Minds<\/em> and comedy Stumble<\/em>, while The Hunting Party<\/em> remains undecided.<\/p>\n NBC executives framed the schedule overhaul as a strategy built around stability and familiar audience habits. \u201cWe wanted stability,\u201d Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal\u2019s President of Program Planning Strategy, told Deadline<\/em>. \u201cFlow was incredibly important; lead-ins do matter.\u201d<\/p>\n Addressing the Law & Order<\/em> move specifically, Bader said pairing the flagship series behind SVU<\/em> made the decision straightforward. \u201cWhen you have shows that are as compatible, obviously, as the two Law & Order<\/em> shows are, it\u2019s an easier marketing lift,\u201d he explained, adding that the network expects the relocation to strengthen its 10 p.m. hour.<\/p>\n The move also reconnects Law & Order<\/em> with a timeslot that defined much of its original run. The franchise has remained one of NBC\u2019s most dependable brands for decades<\/a>, spanning the original series, multiple spinoffs, streaming success, and nonstop syndication.<\/p>\n Last year, NBC leaned heavily into that legacy with its \u201cDun Dun Diner\u201d activation in New York City, celebrating the franchise\u2019s 25th season with themed merchandise, immersive experiences, and callbacks to iconic characters and storylines<\/a>.<\/p>\n Elsewhere on the schedule, The Voice<\/em> remains a major anchor for Mondays, while Chicago Med<\/em>, Chicago Fire<\/em>, and Chicago P.D.<\/em> continue NBC\u2019s long-running \u201cOne Chicago\u201d block on Wednesdays. New drama Line of Fire<\/em>, starring Peter Krause and Hope Davis, lands the coveted Monday 10 p.m. slot after The Voice<\/em>. Meanwhile, The Rockford Files<\/em> reboot starring David Boreanaz is being held for a January launch.<\/p>\n NBC is also betting big on unscripted programming.
