said the Tulsa native and resident, who celebrated her milestone birthday on May 9.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never fit neatly into categories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even four years after finishing her trailblazing <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/entertainment\/2021\/04\/05\/oklahoman-joy-harjo-first-native-american-u-s-poet-laureate\/4675185001\/\">three terms as U.S. Poet Laureate,<\/a> the prolific Muscogee poet, performer and writer continues to work with an eclectic and growing group of collaborators, including five-time Grammy Award winner <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/artists\/esperanza-spalding\/10114\">esperanza spalding<\/a>, who produced Harjo&#8217;s new album, &#8220;Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace.&#8221; Exploring the intersection of jazz and poetry, it&#8217;s her debut release on the storied <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/folkways.si.edu\/\">Smithsonian Folkways Recordings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve played with people I never thought I would play and sing with, so that&#8217;s been cool,&#8221; April 24 via Smithsonian Folkways.\" orientation=\"horizontal\" class=\"spacer-large\" util-module-path=\"elements\/media\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Joy Harjo&#8217;s new album took her to Tulsa&#8217;s historic Church Studio<\/h2>\n<p>With <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/folkways.si.edu\/joy-harjo\/insomnia-and-seven-steps-to-grace\">&#8220;Insomnia and Seven Steps to Grace<\/a>,&#8221; Harjo finds a natural home with the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution, which has a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/folkways.si.edu\/mission-and-history\">rich legacy of showcasing poetry<\/a>, as well as music and other types of sound.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>She also worked on it close to home: The influential Tulsa-based musician, writer and activist recorded for the first time in Tulsa&#8217;s legendary <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/entertainment\/2023\/04\/09\/church-studio-history-tulsa-oklahoma-leon-russell-recording-studio-historic-makes-comeback\/69741998007\/\">Church Studio<\/a>, the musical haven founded in 1972 by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2011\/03\/14\/leon-russell-answers-call-to-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\/61178055007\/\">Leon Russell<\/a> and refurbished and reopened in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would certainly go back. &#8230; They were wonderful, and the studio is great: Great set, great vibe, sounds, history and so on,&#8221; Harjo told The Oklahoman. &#8220;I love being in the recording studio. I love playing, and I love improv-ing live. It&#8217;s just getting there. &#8230; Once I&#8217;m up there, I&#8217;m fine, but I&#8217;d just as soon be in the studio making stuff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her collaboration with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/college.berklee.edu\/people\/esperanza-spalding\">spalding<\/a>, who in 2011 became the first jazz musician to win the Grammy for Best New Artist, came out of their first meeting in 2017, when they were both awarded<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fordfoundation.org\/about\/about-the-ford-foundation\/a-history-of-social-justice\/ford-foundation-at-90\/\"> Art of Change Ford Foundation Fellowships <\/a>in Chicago.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/><partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;With esperanza and I, we understand each other, and she listens. She&#8217;s a good listener. I mean, she&#8217;s an incredible musician and composer and voice, so her listening skills are very finely honed. &#8230; And that makes a huge difference,&#8221; said Harjo, who plays saxophone and flute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re at political crossroads; we&#8217;re at environmental crossroads; we&#8217;re at economic crossroads. We&#8217;re at spiritual crossroads in this country and in the world. &#8230; I wanted the album as a whole to be hopeful, like a musical, poetic map for helping us move through.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While she was working on the album, Harjo\u2019s sister uncovered a song called \u201cMy Guy,\u201d which her musical mother wrote in the 1950s or \u201960s. Featuring spalding\u2019s vocals and Harjo\u2019s alto sax, it&#8217;s a jazzy love song with deep personal resonance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She and my father had a great love of dancing and music. That&#8217;s where they met in one of the dance halls. It was called Casa Loma Dance Hall in Tulsa &#8230; and they danced at Cain&#8217;s Ballroom. And that song is just so her,&#8221; Harjo said.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;We Muscogee people were part of the origins of blues and jazz. &#8230; And if I&#8217;m playing blues and jazz, I&#8217;m playing Muscogee music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the concept behind <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cvindependent.com\/2025\/06\/an-origin-story-former-u-s-poet-laureate-joy-harjo-will-lead-a-staged-reading-of-her-new-musical-during-idyllwild-arts-native-american-arts-festival-week\/\">&#8220;We Were There When Jazz Was Invented,&#8221;<\/a> a musical Harjo is developing. She and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.juliakeefe.com\/\">Julia Keefe<\/a>, leader of the Indigenous Big Band, collaborated last year on a staged reading of the project at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m just looking for a producer somebody to get behind it, to get it up and running,&#8221; Harjo said. &#8220;A lot of it takes place in Tulsa, some of it in New Orleans, and it&#8217;s around music and the origins of blues and jazz.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"76538008007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Joy Harjo to share a Tulsa stage with Anthony Edwards, Bobcat Goldthwait and more<\/h2>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Through her ongoing relationship with the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/entertainment\/2022\/05\/02\/bob-dylan-center-opening-tulsa-near-woody-guthrie-center\/9542021002\/\">Bob Dylan Center<\/a> in her Oklahoma hometown, Harjo will get to share the stage with an intriguing group of fellow artists at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Tulsa&#8217;s Philbrook Museum of Art.
