I rid my cynical brain of thoughts of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/robbie-williams-australia-new-zealand-tour-tickets-92609\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robbie Williams<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/435227\/six60-facing-backlash-after-appearing-on-lotto-scratchie-ticket\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Six60\u2019s scratchie controversy<\/a>, and approached the stadium with total open-mindedness, welcoming the honest possibility of a true \u2018Once in a Lifetime\u2019 experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids wrapped up in scarves and beanies were walking around with their mouths hanging open, likely the first time a lot of them have been in a space this large with so many people at once. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we strolled through the E entrance, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the vendors literally yelled \u201chotdogs hotdogs, come get your hotdogs,\u201d while someone else handed me a free sample of fancy muesli, just the beginning of an evening of confidence and abundance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We arrived early enough for the opening act, so the lines were a breeze (one of many reasons gig-goers should be punctual for support bands), and with two beers, two hotdogs, hot chips, and muesli sample in hand, we found our seats with no trouble and soaked in the atmosphere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>A large circular structure in the middle of the stadium had me imagining some sort of Taylor Swift-esque <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BrX8TIKdQ5c\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">understage rocket sled<\/a> situation, while a constant stream of people trickled around \u2018Chekhov\u2019s Stage\u2019 and pooled in front of the enormous north stage, growing closer to the total 37,000 slated to attend.<\/p>\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form justify-content-center my-3 p-0 d-flex align-items-stretch bg-dark text-white\">\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form-info p-3\" style=\"justify-content: start;\">\n<h2 class=\"h5 mb-0 observer-title\">Love Music?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"observer-desc mb-2\">\n            Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian\/New Zealand music and globally.        <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"spinner d-none\">\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right on schedule, local five-piece <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/castaway-interview-christchurch-one-nz-stadium-concert-more-95046\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Castaway<\/a><\/strong> barrelled into view, and within about 30 seconds of their first pop-rock anthem, the band\u2019s frontperson was rallying the crowd to clap along, and we all happily obliged. They sound, meanwhile, like a teen dream band with hints of the 1975, Evermore, and Silverchair. A special mention must go out to Castaway\u2019s keys and saxophone player Jack Hassell, whose full-noise thrust dancing was visible (and felt) from every single seat at Te Kaha.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAre you ready for the night of your lives?\u201d Sarah Gandy, MC for the night, asked us, and I realised the rest of the crowd had green light-up bracelets, while my wrist was bare. Would this stop me from having the night of my life?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next support act was 2025 AMA Best Pop Artist <strong>Cassie Henderson<\/strong>, a real-deal pop princess with flawless blonde curtain bangs and a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silver_Julien_Macdonald_dress_of_Paris_Hilton\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Hilton-esque<\/a> blue dress. I hardly had time to think about how strange it is for one of the country\u2019s most popular songwriters to sing in a full-blown American accent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cue the Crusaders theme song \u2014 aka \u201cConquest of Paradise\u201d by Greek composer Vangelis \u2014 jump-scaring me into 2005 memories of \u2018Take a Kid to Footy\u2019 packs, cheeseburger vouchers, and horses galloping around Jade Stadium. There may not have been horses inside Te Kaha last night, but <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/kaylee-bell-interview-cowboy-up-84506\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kaylee Bell<\/strong><\/a> was delivered to the stage by the Crusaders lads themselves; she even performed her first song whilst holding a rugby ball in one hand, bedazzled mic in the other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bell\u2019s whole thing is that she\u2019s a small-town country girl who lives the Americana dream from South Canterbury. Like Henderson, she sang in a thick American accent, only switching to her thick New Zealand accent to talk to the crowd between songs. It could be the current political climate of the Southern US, the AI visuals towering two-storeys high behind her band, or the significance of a local sports team being <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/386241\/crusaders-name-change-maintaining-the-status-quo-no-longer-tenable\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called the Crusaders<\/a>, but something about Bell bringing out Zed\u2019s Nathan King didn\u2019t quite hit my 2000s nostalgia button the way it was supposed to.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95097\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/six60-synthony-once-in-a-lifetime-concert-live-review-95092\/attachment\/26-35-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-95097\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95097\" width=\"758\" height=\"948\" src=\"https:\/\/images-r2-1.thebrag.com\/rs\/uploads\/2026\/05\/26-35-2.jpg\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95097\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-95097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Kaylee Bell Credit: @greghaver<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the nick of time, however, Bell welcomed onto the stage Aotearoa\u2019s Black Ferns to line dance in white cowboy hats and cut-offs, and all was forgiven. I was completely sucked in to the spectacle, my eyes taking in every bonkers thing that happened next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bell\u2019s hoedown was followed by the returning MC Gandy, who made sure everyone was still having a good time. She boldly asked more than 30,000 people to turn off their green light-up bracelets so they didn\u2019t interfere with Synthony\u2019s production. 99% of the crowd duly followed her request, turning off their bracelets en masse \u2014 Sarah Gandy for Prime Minister, anyone?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 30 minutes to go before co-headliner <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/six60-announce-fifth-studio-album-share-two-singles-89828\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Six60<\/strong><\/a> were due on stage, I faced the unknown: the toilets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The loo-going experience at Te Kaha, I\u2019m pleased to report, was functional and surprisingly chill thanks to the sheer volume of cubicles; as one lady succinctly put it, \u201cThere\u2019s thousands of them.\u201d (Citation needed!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once back in my seat, now cosymaxxing in every bit of warm-weather gear I\u2019d brought with me (possum gloves, woollen balaclava, wool-lined leather jacket), the lights dimmed and the crowd roared. Six60 strode onto the stage, comfortable with an audience in the tens of thousands, and stood shoulder-to-shoulder to greet the wall of cheers before finding their places and playing the unmistakable bassline of their breakout hit \u201cDon\u2019t Forget Your Roots\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kudos to the production team behind the show, because the only time I thought I heard anything even close to an audio error was when I mistook the voices of 35,000 people singing along to Six60 as some sort of echoing delay in Matiu Walters\u2019 unfaltering vocals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95098\" style=\"width: 692px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/six60-synthony-once-in-a-lifetime-concert-live-review-95092\/attachment\/26-23-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-95098\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95098\" width=\"682\" height=\"852\" src=\"https:\/\/images-r2-1.thebrag.com\/rs\/uploads\/2026\/05\/26-23-2.jpg\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95098\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-95098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Six60\u2019s Matiu Walters Credit: @greghaver<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A kapa haka group took over the stage for the iconic \u201cDon\u2019t Forget Your Roots\u201d \/ \u201cKa Mate\u201d mash-up, and I was totally hypnotised by a sea of piupiu and synchronised poi, my cynicism from an hour earlier completely melted. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind the band on the mammoth screens, a new visual design complemented each song. There was a Haast eagle-sized 3D rendered t\u016b\u012b for \u201cOnly to Be\u201d; phosphorescent butterflies for when they were joined by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/drax-project-interview-summer-rain-single-87533\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drax Project<\/a>\u2019s Shaan Singh (the third featured saxophonist of the night) to sing \u201cCatching Feelings\u201d; swirling gold flake, Rihanna \u201cUmbrella\u201d music video vibes for \u201cSpecial\u201d; and three digital billboards displaying the live feed of the band while two \u201cvibes guys\u201d were brought onto the stage to, well, bring the vibes for \u201cWe Made It\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For \u201cFade Away\u201d, Six60 were joined by two rows of drummer boys, a sly distraction which allowed the tech team to start setting up music stands on the circular stage. While the snares, toms, and bass drums rumbled on, Six60 speed-walked around the crowd and emerged in the centre of the stadium, bassist Chris Mac making sure to bring his glass of red wine with him from one stage to the next. They were surrounded by classical strings and tasteful violin plucking for several stripped-back songs, including \u201cPurple\u201d and \u201cRivers\u201d, with the performances elevated by the accompaniment and Walters\u2019 velvety vocals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <strong>Synthony<\/strong> violinist Arna Morton suddenly took the spotlight, you knew it was party time: she ripped off her shirt to reveal a bikini top, played the melody from Fatboy Slim\u2019s \u201cRight Here, Right Now\u201d, and a laser light show was unleashed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthony \u2014 aka the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in rave mode \u2014 took over the main stage, and the decibels rose significantly. This is when you would have perfectly timed your drugs to hit (I assume), oblivious to the fact that your mind is about to be blown out of your ears by Synthony and the one and only Savage launching into <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-australian-new-zealand-songs-21st-century-so-far-list-87989\/savage-swing-88418\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSwing\u201d<\/a>. Bolts of flame shoot upwards between the mosh pit and the orchestra as Bell came back to perform \u201cWake Me Up\u201d by Avicii, followed by a stream of non-stop bangers performed by a stacked lineup: Emily Williams, Nyree Huyser, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/up-and-coming-aotearoa-artists-prins-44634\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PRINS<\/a>, all helmed by Shapeshifter\u2019s P Digsss and conductor Sarah Grace Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just when you thought the spectacle couldn\u2019t get any more spectacular, P Digsss introduced the \u201cbravest\u201d saxophone player <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis McCallum for \u201cGood Feeling\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I giggled and gasped and pointed as McCallum rose on wires from the back of the crowd, absolutely ripping the sax while hovering in the middle of Te Kaha. Crash-zoom back to the Christchurch Synthony Orchestra as they teased dance hit \u201cSandstorm\u201d to a buzzing stadium, only for Savage to return for the most well received mash-up I\u2019ve ever witnessed, injecting \u201cFreaks\u201d smack-bang into the Darude hit. The \u2018Freakstorm\u2019 ended with Savage leading the crowd in a hearty chant of \u201cUp the Wahs\u201d. It was epic \u2014 everyone lost their shit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say I am overstimulated at this point would be an understatement, and as Six60 joined Synthony for another bout of hit songs, my jaw started to hurt from my stupid grin.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DYajqKoE3qA\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRise Up\u201d rippled over the crowd and Walters literally started to rise up on a precarious platform, front and centre on the main stage, to what I would estimate was approximately a height of 20 feet. Do not quote me on that \u2014 just know that he was very high up and it made me nervous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About a dozen encores and several motivational goodbye speeches later, Once in a Lifetime came to a close. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I filed out of the stadium in a daze, trying to absorb what I\u2019d just witnessed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps I just haven\u2019t been to many big-budget live productions, but I could only compare this experience to seeing Taylor Swift at T\u0101maki Makaurau\u2019s Mount Smart Stadium in 2018 \u2014 the other stadium extravaganza I\u2019ve attended. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even for this indie music girl at heart, who thinks major events like Once in a Lifetime have nothing on sacred local venues and DIY bands, it was impossible to deny the all-encompassing audacity of the very first concert at Te Kaha. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Annabel Kean is a writer, actor, and filmmaker based in \u014ctautahi.
