\nsaid the King had \u201cgraciously accepted\u201d her invitation, although
\nBuckingham Palace has not officially confirmed any future state
\nvisit.<\/p>\n
The meeting formed part of Connolly\u2019s three-day visit to the UK
\nand marked her first official trip to Britain since becoming
\npresident last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the highlight really was the invitation that I extended
\nhim as the 10th president of Ireland to make a State visit to
\nIreland, and he graciously accepted that,\u201d Connolly told reporters
\nafterwards.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, the details will emerge in due course between the two
\ngovernments.\u201d<\/p>\n
If confirmed, the visit would become the King\u2019s first official
\nstate visit to Ireland as monarch, although he travelled to the
\ncountry frequently during his time as Prince of Wales.<\/p>\n
Connolly said she believed the visit would further strengthen
\nrelations between Britain and Ireland.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am sure that he will receive the warmest of welcomes and this
\nwill represent a further deepening of our relationship as
\nneighbours and as friends,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The president also revealed the pair discussed climate change
\nand environmental issues during their Buckingham Palace meeting \u2014
\ntopics that have long been closely associated with the King.<\/p>\n
The proposed visit would carry considerable historic
\nsignificance.<\/p>\n
The last reigning British monarch to undertake a state visit to
\nIreland was Elizabeth II in 2011, in what became a landmark moment
