It just sounds like home to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powys, vocalist-guitarist Sam Bentley, vocalist-keys player Christina Lacy, drummer Josh Bentley and bassist Sam Rasmussen were coming off an intense period surrounding 2023 LP <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/2UpcMYFkeMbmD1LiBjvYn9?si=gqreRr7hQZyByAj67BLALA\"><em>At the Roadhouse<\/em><\/a>, which featured an eight-person ensemble, and wanted to get back to the roots \u2014 they wrote most of their seventh full-length at a friend\u2019s farm in Melbourne\u2019s Yarra Valley. It was really validating for us to work on something again just with the original band and put an album together that we\u2019re all really proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such songs as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/3PCOdtoIhxnqdg6FWhgnMk?si=ccdadb711f3549c2\">\u201cWhen the Lavender Blooms\u201d<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/1LR7WF70vR0NDHpyXknoMw?si=b132822d58ab4bc9\">\u201cShake Off the Rain\u201d<\/a> strike familiar chords, something The Paper Kites are expertly empathic at.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/Paper-Kites-pic-1-Tim-Harris-e1778705511422.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40885097\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Seventeen years in, the Aussie band is still writing just as evocatively as ever.  <\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI think that we\u2019re pretty tuned in on to when we hear something or write something that feels good, and we\u2019ll chase that feeling or that mood until the songs done,\u201d Powys says. \u201cWe\u2019ll really quickly recognize something that feels like it can be great. We usually try to let songs have their day. We\u2019re well-seasoned at knowing straight away if something\u2019s going to be great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Listeners pick up on that, too, but how that translates live to the fanbase is more unpredictable, though The Paper Kites always offer a semblance of a sonice home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere can be some really beautiful stories people share, and whether you like it or not, these songs become a part of peoples\u2019 lives and part of peoples\u2019 journeys, which is incredible,\u201d he says. \u201cAs soon as you release those songs or an album, they\u2019re no longer ours, they belong to the listener and take on all different sorts of meanings to people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s the best part of what we do. It can sometimes feel a little monotonous if you\u2019re on a four- or five-week tour and you\u2019re playing every night, but then you hear a story or you meet someone and you know that a song has connected or someone has driven six hours to come and see you play for the first time,\u201d Powsy concludes, adding a note about how he recently met a family whose kids had literally been listening to The Paper Kites since they were born. \u201cIt\u2019s really sweet meeting these people.
