Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem unleashed a profanity-laced critique<\/a> at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, taking aim at world leaders including Donald Trump<\/a>, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bardem said toxic masculinity, a central theme in his new film \u201cThe Beloved<\/a>,\u201d stems from \u201cthe bad education that we have received for many ages,\u201d adding that he, too, is a product of that culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m 57 years old, coming from a very machista country called Spain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The \u201cNo Country for Old Men\u201d star pointed to violence against women<\/a> in his home country as a stark example of how toxic masculinity can become normalized.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere is an average of two women killed monthly by their ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends, which is horrible,\u201d Bardem said. \u201cJust that amount of women being murdered \u2014 it\u2019s unbelievable. And we\u2019ve kind of normalized it. It\u2019s like, \u2018Well, yeah, it\u2019s horrible.\u2019 I mean, are we fucking nuts? We are killing women because some men think they own them? They possess them?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bardem, who is married to fellow Hollywood star Penelope Cruz, then argued that some world leaders have the same mindset.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAnd that problem also goes to Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin and Mr. Netanyahu,\u201d he said. \u201cThe big balls man saying, \u2018My cock is bigger than yours, and I\u2019m going to bomb the shit out of you.\u2019 That is a fucking male toxic behavior that is creating thousands of dead people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSo, yeah, we have to talk about it,\u201d Bardem added, noting that \u201cthis movie speaks about that\u201d before later reiterating his criticism of Israel\u2019s actions in Gaza, calling it a \u201cfact\u201d that genocide has been committed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
