Top Gun<\/em><\/a>screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. always wanted Tom Cruise<\/a> to star in the film. He took a little convincing.<\/p>\nEpps, 76, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer<\/a> opened up to The Guardian<\/em><\/a> in an article published May 16 about how they got Cruise, 63, to star in their film. \u201cWe were finishing up the script and I turned it over to Jerry Bruckheimer at the gates of Bel Air on a Saturday night. I said, \u2018Jerry, think Tom Cruise when you read this,’ \u201d Epps said. Bruckheimer and producer Don Simpson loved the script and thought casting Cruise was a \u201cgreat idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now the men just had to convince Cruise to say yes, which Bruckheimer said wasn’t easy. At the time, he had grown his hair long to appear in Ridley Scott’s 1985 film Legend<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\nBruckheimer remembered, \u201cWe couldn’t quite get him to commit so I arranged for him to fly with the Blue Angels in El Centro, California. He had long hair and a ponytail and they saw this guy walk up and they said, \u2018We’ll get this hippy a real ride.’ \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
