{"id":2423979,"date":"2026-05-19T22:43:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T22:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2423979"},"modified":"2026-05-19T22:43:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T22:43:47","slug":"jeffrey-kahane-launches-a-new-orchestra-and-educational-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/jeffrey-kahane-launches-a-new-orchestra-and-educational-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeffrey Kahane launches a new orchestra and educational initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\t\t<iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 175px; border: none; display: none\" data-org=\"7de3f7f22bc2e75fe17b999694f57692.e6977d\" allowfullscreen=\"false\" allowtransparency=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"ad-auris-iframe\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Just months after resigning from the San Antonio Philharmonic, conductor Jeffrey Kahane is launching a new orchestra and educational initiative in San Antonio, where he will serve as founding artistic director.<\/p>\n<p>Kahane announced Tuesday that the new organization, Harmonium of Texas, will focus on orchestral performances, music education and community partnerships across the city.<\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>The launch comes as the San Antonio Philharmonic continues to navigate financial and organizational instability following the 2022 collapse of the San Antonio Symphony. Kahane\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/arts-culture\/2026-02-09\/yet-another-blow-to-the-san-antonio-philharmonic-as-music-director-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned as the Philharmonic\u2019s music director in February<\/a>, and the organization later canceled much of its 2025-2026 season amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding its future and its planned permanent home at the historic Scottish Rite Hall downtown.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n<aside id=\"bs_zones-4\" class=\"widget-odd widget-last widget-first widget-1 bs_zones clearfix\"\/><\/aside>\n<p>The Philharmonic has since announced a smaller series of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/arts-culture\/2026-05-05\/san-antonio-philharmonic-announces-amor-fati-concerts-amid-ongoing-challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cAmor Fati\u201d<\/a>\u00a0performances \u2014 named after the Latin phrase for \u201clove of fate\u201d \u2014 while it works to stabilize the organization.<\/p>\n<p>In a December interview with TPR, conducted months before his resignation, Kahane acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding San Antonio\u2019s broader classical music scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know there\u2019s been a lot of drama,\u201d he said. \u201cI can imagine that there\u2019s a lot of confusion among the music lovers here in San Antonio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reached by text, Kahane told TPR of current fundraising success for Harmonium of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have raised $835,000 as of today in 2 1\/2 months,\u201d Kahane said. \u201cAnd we have quite a number of people who have indicated that they absolutely intend to pledge to Harmonium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kahane added the new organization\u2019s 501(c)(3) is pending and should be finalized within the next few months.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n<aside id=\"bs_zones-5\" class=\"widget-odd widget-last widget-first widget-1 bs_zones clearfix\"\/><\/aside>\n<p>Harmonium of Texas will become at least the city\u2019s third professional orchestra. Alongside the Philharmonic, The Orchestra San Antonio has also emerged in recent years as the resident symphony at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, accompanying productions by Ballet San Antonio and Opera San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>According to the press release and its website, Harmonium of Texas will feature collaborations with the San Antonio Mastersingers, side-by-side performances with the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA), and educational programming aimed at young musicians and adult learners.<\/p>\n<p>The organization has also named Spanish conductor Cosette Justo Vald\u00e9s as principal guest conductor, cellist and composer Andrea Casarrubios as composer-in-residence, and Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth as an artistic partner.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural season will run from October 2026 through May 2027 and feature performances at venues across San Antonio, including Lila Cockrell Auditorium and Stable Hall at Pearl.<\/p>\n<p>Guest artists scheduled to appear include Joshua Bell, Larisa Mart\u00ednez, Emanuel Ax, Tessa Lark and Nancy Zhou. The season will include a two-part Beethoven celebration, Bach\u2019s \u201cSt. Matthew Passion,\u201d the complete Brandenburg Concertos and collaborations with YOSA and the San Antonio Mastersingers.<\/p>\n<p>The opening concert on Oct. 2, 2026, will feature Tessa Lark performing Michael Torke\u2019s\u00a0<em>Sky<\/em>\u00a0alongside John Adams\u2019s\u00a0<em>Short Ride in a Fast Machine<\/em>\u00a0and Carl Orff\u2019s\u00a0<em>Carmina Burana<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Kahane said the organization also plans to create a fund to help families obtain musical instruments and music lessons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my firm conviction that an orchestra can and must serve as an instrument of community,\u201d Kahane said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for the inaugural season go on sale July 27.
