The Grey\u2019s Anatomy <\/em>universe is expanding \u2014 this time, with a series set down south. ABC announced on Tuesday that it had greenlighted a brand-new spinoff series of the beloved medical drama from Shonda Rhimes, the original show\u2019s creator and executive producer, and Meg Marinis, who has been the Grey\u2019s <\/em>showrunner since Season 20. Rhimes and Marinis will be credited as co-creators of the spinoff.<\/p>\n The untitled medical drama has received a straight-to-series order and is slated to debut in midseason 2027, according to Deadline<\/a>. Grey\u2019s<\/em> star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo will also serve as an executive producer for the new offshoot.<\/p>\n The official Grey\u2019s Anatomy <\/em>Instagram account<\/a> confirmed the news in a joint post with ABC, alongside the caption, \u201cJust what the doctor ordered. \ud83e\ude7a\ud83e\udd20.\u201d<\/p>\n The spinoff, which comes more than 20 years after the original series premiered, will be produced by 20th Television and Shondaland. It will mark the fourth installment of the Grey\u2019s Anatomy <\/em>franchise, following Private Practice <\/em>and Station 19,<\/em> and the first that is set neither on the West Coast nor in a big city. Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> and Station 19, <\/em>as fans know, are set in Seattle, while Private Practice <\/em>took place in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n Per Variety<\/a>, the hourlong series is \u201can edgy drama about a team at a West Texas rural medical center \u2014 the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.\u201d While the show will revolve around a brand-new crop of doctors, Deadline reported that it\u2019ll likely still be part of the wider Grey\u2019s Anatomy <\/em>universe.<\/p>\n \u201cI am incredibly excited to expand the Grey\u2019s Anatomy <\/em>universe,\u201d Marinis said in a statement to Deadline. \u201cThis opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey\u2019s<\/em> for more than two decades \u2014 all set in my home state of Texas.
