ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. \u2013 New Mexico music icon Al Hurricane Jr., known as \u201cEl Godson\u201d and the son of Al Hurricane Sr., has died. He was 66.<\/p>\n
The Sanchez family announced his death in a statement on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with a heavy heart that the Sanchez family shares the devastating and untimely passing of Al Hurricane, Jr. He was a New Mexican music legend to all, but to us he was an amazing father, grandfather, sibling, son, and friend. We truly appreciate all the prayers & support. We respectfully ask for privacy as we mourn as a family. \u00a1Qu\u00e9 viva El Godson!\u201d<\/em> the family said.<\/p>\n Al Hurricane Jr. was born on Oct. 30, 1959. He was the son of Al Hurricane Sr., who was known as the godfather of New Mexico music.<\/p>\n Hurricane Jr. became known as \u201cEl Godson\u201d of New Mexico music and created numerous solo albums.<\/p>\n The family asked for privacy as they mourn.<\/p>\n The Albuquerque Biopark had announced just hours before the news of Hurricane\u2019s death that he was set to perform there on July 30. <\/p>\n Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued a statement on social media <\/p>\n \u201cNew Mexico lost one of its own today. Al Hurricane, Jr. \u2014 El Godson \u2014 carried forward a musical legacy that is woven into the fabric of who we are as a state,\u201d <\/em>the governor said. \u201cHe was a true New Mexican entertainer who delighted generations. From the time he first stepped on stage as a child to every performance that followed, Al Hurricane Jr. gave us joy, pride, and a sound that is uniquely, beautifully ours.
