JPR arts reporter Vanessa Finney and Open Air host and music curator Dave Jackson shared recommendations ranging from new albums and live performances to outdoor concerts and a book release.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">Fresh sounds worth hearing<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"\"><b>Karsh Kale<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Jackson recommends the new album from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sixdegreesrecords.com\/karsh-kale\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Karsh Kale<\/a>, a tabla player who helped pioneer Asian fusion, a blend of traditional Indian music, electronica and dance music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just the kind of thing that I listen to and go, \u2018Ah, there\u2019s something that\u2019s different. I like that,\u2019\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>Kale stepped away from music for about a decade before returning with a new creative process that began with 28 paintings, which later inspired piano compositions and eventually became songs.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\"><b>Jobi Riccio<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Jackson also highlighted a new release from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jobiriccio.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Jobi Riccio<\/a>, who previously won the John Prine Fellowship from the Newport Folk Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said her latest album expands beyond traditional songwriting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt blends a lot of that songwriting, but she actually shows kind of an indie rock side of her character as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\"><b>Tank and the Bangas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>He also recommends <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tankandthebangas.com\/#\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Tank and the Bangas<\/a>, the New Orleans hip-hop group that won NPR\u2019s Tiny Desk Contest in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Lead singer Tarriona &#8216;Tank&#8217; Ball) is a great freestyle rapper and a poet,&#8221; Jackson said. &#8220;She has a lot of positive messages in her music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said the band&#8217;s layered sound initially surprised him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time I heard it, I class=\"\">Live music and festivals<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"\">Sage Cook and Aera Fox<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sageandaera.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Sage Cook and Aera Fox<\/a> of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wedreamdawn.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">We Dream Dawn<\/a> will perform live at JPR on Thursday, May 21, at noon.<\/p>\n<p>The pair serve as the core of a larger \u201csemi-psychedelic\u201d group and released their debut album last year, &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.submithub.com\/link\/love-undoubtedly-underlies-everything\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Love Undoubtedly Underlies Everything<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said listeners may hear a familiar influence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has kind of an \u201980s vibe to it, I think,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The duo also performs Thursday at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dosmariposasvineyards.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Dos Mariposas Vineyard<\/a> in Medford beginning at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Brews, Bluegrass and BBQ<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/roxyann.com\/event\/brews-bluegrass-bbq-2026\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Brews, Bluegrass, and BBQ<\/a>  returns Saturday, June 6, at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/roxyann.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqc5B241vq1NDo3odEVvtBKnWwCOwB2bSeOgtvjcs470rP0YRRB\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">RoxyAnn Winery<\/a> in Medford.<\/p>\n<p>The event includes barbecue, local beer and cider, and six hours of music featuring Desert Hollow, Mountaintop Sound, Bell Towers and Portland-based <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nevercomedownband.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Never Come Down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said the event offers more than a concert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s some good local music, good music coming in from Portland,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event benefits the Rogue Valley Food System Network, which works to reduce food insecurity, support sustainable farming and strengthen local food systems.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Community Rising III<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pacificagarden.networkforgood.com\/events\/98857-community-rising-iii-benefit-concert-for-pacifica-s-music-programs-and-youth-scholarships\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Community Rising III<\/a> takes place May 29-30 at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pacificagarden.org\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Pacifica Ranch<\/a> in Williams.<\/p>\n<p>The event raises money for Pacifica\u2019s music and scholarship programs while also supporting educational opportunities for children and home-based learners.<\/p>\n<p>Festivalgoers can camp on-site and browse food vendors, artisan booths and other activities.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson described the event as \u201ca miniature country fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lineup includes <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/yakattackmusic.com\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Yak Attack<\/a>, Southern Oregon band The Frenzies, Emily Turner, Skyler Squglio and Jared Masters.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\">Eugene Gleemen Anniversary<\/h3>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eugenegleemen.org\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Eugene Gleemen<\/a>, an all-male choral group based in Eugene and Springfield, will celebrate their 100th anniversary May 30 at the University of Oregon\u2019s MacArthur Court.<\/p>\n<p>Finney said the group has become part of the area&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;ve been woven into the fabric of that area,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The spring gala is also an official America 250 Oregon event and includes historical exhibits and docent-led tours before the performance begins.<\/p>\n<p>The concert also serves as a farewell to artistic director John Lancy, who has led the choir for 23 years.<\/p>\n<div will bring his &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inalandscape.org\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">In a Landscape: Classical Music in the Wild<\/a>&#8221; series to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aftontickets.com\/event\/buyticket\/3px8ekrgx1\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\">Applegate Lake<\/a> on May 30 and 31.<\/p>\n<p>Noack performs on a nine-foot Steinway grand piano placed outdoors.
