Gregg Allman, photo by Sidney Smith<\/em><\/p>\n Gregg Allman\u2019s tremendous musical accomplishments and full life led in dedication to his craft have earned him recognition as one of rock\u2019s most influential figures. That towering legacy will finally be chronicled on screen with Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul<\/em>, the forthcoming documentary on the late Allman Brothers Band co-founder and guitarist directed by James Keach. Two months out from the film\u2019s premiere, fans have received a first look at the film in a new trailer.<\/p>\n Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul <\/em>explores its subject\u2019s storied career with archival recordings, unseen interviews and rare Allman Brothers Band live footage, illustrating the man behind the icon by examining his challenges and achievements on and off the stage with the ABB\u2019s many eras and his prolific solo career. Directed by the Grammy and Emmy award-winning filmmaker Keach (Walk the Line<\/em>, Glen Campbell: I\u2019ll Be Me<\/em>, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice<\/em>) and produced by Allman\u2019s longtime manager Michael Lehman, among others, the film will see its theatrical release on June 17, with week-long presentations in New York and Los Angeles and New York and one-off screenings at 200 theaters nationwide.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cNot everyone works this way, but I believe that understanding trauma from the formative years of a person\u2019s life is central when telling their story in a documentary,\u201d Keach detailed about the film and his narrative process. \u201cA lot of incredible artists have these shattering experiences in their past that inform every aspect of their lives and talent. Gregg had those demons inside his amazingly creative brain. He dove deep into his addiction when Duane died, but later in life, when he was sober, he faced his own mortality with dignity and acceptance. It\u2019s personally important to me to carry Gregg\u2019s message of trying to change the trajectory of people consumed by addiction. You can hear the ache in his voice in his brilliant music.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cGregg was impacted by, among other things, his profoundly close relationship and the tragic loss of his brother Duane. His music reflects the joy and the pain of his life experiences,\u201d Lehman shared. \u201cI chose James Keach to direct this film because James is both an incredibly talented director and has a close relationship with his own brother, Stacy. I knew from the start that he would bring to life Gregg\u2019s story, including the relationship with Duane and with his band, The Allman Brothers Band, and that James would be able to create both an enjoyable and deeply memorable film.\u201d<\/p>\n The arrival of Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul<\/em> will be marked by premiere events in New Yrok an Savannah, Ga. In New York, on July 9, attendees will catch an intimate acoustic performance from Devon Allman and Duane Betts. On July 17, Savannah\u2019s historic Lucas Theatre for the Arts will host a special event featuring a performance from Chuch Leavell, a Q&A with members of the documentary\u2019s production team and a pop-up from the Allman Brothers Band Big House Museum in nearby Macon, Ga.
