While\u00a0Sorry to Bother You\u00a0used telemarketing to critique capitalism, this film focuses on boosters aka professional shoplifters. Boots says he had personal experience with that world during his years as a “broke rapper” trying to keep up with fashion.<\/p>\n
He explains, \u201cI\u2019ve spent decades being a broke rapper … and when you have no money and you\u2019re trying to stay fly, you better call a booster.”<\/p>\n
The film follows a group of professional shoplifters who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven by stealing her clothes and reselling them.<\/p>\n
Boots says his interest in boosters comes from how often they are \u201cvillainized,\u201d\u00a0suggesting they play a role in working-class communities and communities of color.<\/p>\n
\u201cBoosters serve in a world in which style … is generated from communities of color and other poorer communities that can\u2019t afford the stuff that gets generated from those inspirations,\u201d he argues. \u201cAnd so boosters actually end up … being something that holds the community together while people are trying to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n
The film also stars\u00a0Keke Palmer, whom Boots says he wanted to challenge creatively.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople think she\u2019s inspiring on film, and on TV and on Instagram. She\u2019s more so in person,\u201d he says. \u201cShe\u2019s such a bright, shining beacon and she is smart as hell.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He adds that he believes the film is both of their best work.<\/p>\n
