The light was on. I saw your silhouette on the blind.\u2026\u201d It\u2019s a bittersweet memory from long ago, something like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/beatles\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beatles\" data-tag=\"beatles\">the Beatles<\/a>\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YgFo9STa70E\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YgFo9STa70E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cNo Reply,\u201d<\/a> but with all the resentment replaced by gentler feelings. \u201cDo I ever cross your mind as you lie there?\u201d he asks that ancient crush. Then the band kicks in \u2014 actually, it\u2019s mostly just Sir Paul himself, playing at least nine instruments \u2014 and there it is: All these years later, there are still few greater pleasures in pop music than hearing this one guy rock out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAs You Lie There\u201d is the first song on <em>The Boys of Dungeon Lane<\/em>, Mc\u00adCartney\u2019s first studio album in six years, and it sets the tone for this warm, nostalgic late-career masterpiece. There are several songs about his early years in Liverpool, including a good-old-days duet with his buddy <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ringo-starr\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ringo-starr\/\">Ringo Starr<\/a>; the album\u2019s title references a street in the neighborhood where both he and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/george-harrison\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/george-harrison\/\">George Harrison<\/a> grew up. Overall, there\u2019s the sense of a legend looking back on a life well spent. This isn\u2019t necessarily a new theme for McCartney, who\u2019s been singing about what he once called his <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6N56gPjBVJ0\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6N56gPjBVJ0\">ever-present past<\/a> for years now. But the autumnal vibe is more pronounced than ever, and there\u2019s an unusual poignance to songs like \u201cDays We Left Behind,\u201d where he shuffles through some old black-and-white photos and finds only \u201csmoky bars and cheap guitars\/But nothing built to last.\u201d It\u2019s one of the most moving acoustic ballads in a canon that\u2019s far from short on them, a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NrgmdOz227I\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NrgmdOz227I\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cYesterday\u201d<\/a> with six more decades of experience behind the quiet sadness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat\u2019s not to say that this album is a downer, by any means. McCartney\u2019s life force remains undimmed throughout these 14 tracks, and the joy he finds in making music comes through in every chord change. Co-producer Andrew Watt, who\u2019s become this dec\u00adade\u2019s chief classic-rock whisperer through his work with the Stones and Ozzy Osbourne, adds synths and guitars here and there. Mostly, though, he\u2019s smart enough to get out of the way and let one of the most naturally gifted musicians in history do his thing. It\u2019s a refreshing contrast to 2010s efforts like <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/new-110077\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/new-110077\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New<\/a><\/em> and <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-paul-mccartneys-awesomely-eccentric-egypt-station-719365\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-paul-mccartneys-awesomely-eccentric-egypt-station-719365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Egypt Station<\/a><\/em>, where McCartney brought in multiple pop-oriented collaborators with varying results. He seems to have learned that what we really want from a new solo album at this stage in his career is more McCartney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>The Boys of Dungeon Lane<\/em> closes with a pair of thematically linked songs about parenthood under difficult circumstances. \u201cSalesman Saint\u201d evokes his real-life father and mother, Jim and Mary, and their choice to start a family in wartime England: \u201cThey couldn\u2019t take anymore, but they had to carry on,\u201d he sings. \u201cSo they learned to carry on, with laughter and a song.\u201d Even more impressive is \u201cMomma Gets By,\u201d where he imagines a couple whose life might look like misery to an outsider, but who love each other all the same. She\u2019s a working mom, perhaps an acquaintance of the women he wrote about in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uLRiGX3L-kw\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uLRiGX3L-kw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cLady Madonna\u201d<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jgVyeCcCyw8\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jgVyeCcCyw8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cAnother Day\u201d<\/a>; her husband is too busy getting high to lend a hand. \u201cEven though he\u2019s complicated, she takes it in her stride,\u201d McCartney sings. \u201cWhat are his silly faults compared to what she feels inside?\u201d His voice strains slightly to reach the high note.
