Charles attends a performance of The Tempest by the Royal Shakespeare Company (Image: Jeff Spicer\/PA)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n The King<\/a> delighted theatregoers when he took his seat near members of the public to watch a sold-out performance of a Shakespeare play.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Charles was met with cheers from crowds of people when he arrived at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, as a surprise guest at a production of The Tempest starring Sir Kenneth Branagh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On his arrival, the King was greeted by the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, Tim Cox, as well as the Royal Shakespeare Company\u2019s (RSC) co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Charles arriving at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (Image: Jacob King\/PA)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n Audience members peered down from the seating in the dress circle inside the auditorium, while others in the stalls got their phones out to take pictures when Charles took his seat near the back between Mr Evans and Ms Harvey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He also sat near Sir Richard Eyre, who directed the performance for the RSC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Ms Harvey said the King was \u201claughing away\u201d next to her during the performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n She added: \u201cI think he genuinely enjoyed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mr Evans said: \u201cWhen Guy Henry came on, who plays Stephano, he reached over to me and said \u2018Is that Guy Henry?\u2019 I was just astonished at his knowledge of actors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cYou get the impression he\u2019s a true enthusiast of the theatre.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n During the interval, the King was handed a drink before he met the RSC\u2019s in-house costume department and admired a crown used in the company\u2019s production of Edward II last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He also touched the fabric of a dress worn by Dame Judi Dench in All\u2019s Well That Ends Well in 2003, while he marvelled at David Tennant\u2019s robe and gown from his role in Richard II in 2013 and a costume worn by Sir Antony Sher in a 1984 production of Richard III.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The King described the costumes as \u201cbrilliant\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n He also gave a standing ovation at the end of the performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Charles has been the patron of the RSC since 2024, following in the footsteps of the late Queen Elizabeth II \u2013 who held the patronage since the company\u2019s creation in 1961.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The King surprised the audience when he took his seat in the theatre (Image: Jeff Spicer\/PA)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n Sir Kenneth is playing the role of the exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, for the first time in his career, which has included 35 Shakespeare productions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Tempest, which was one of the last plays written by Shakespeare, is running at the theatre until June 20.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mr Evans and Ms Harvey said in a statement: \u201cIt was a tremendous honour to welcome His Majesty the King back to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre for this landmark production of The Tempest, which marks both Sir Kenneth Branagh\u2019s historic return to Stratford-upon-Avon for the first time in over 30 years and Sir Richard Eyre\u2019s debut with the company after a long and distinguished career directing for the British stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n \u2018 The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n \u2018 Some details of this article were extracted from the following source www.express.co.uk \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Charles attends a performance of The Tempest by the Royal Shakespeare Company (Image: Jeff Spicer\/PA) The King delighted theatregoers when he took his seat near members of the public to watch a sold-out performance of a Shakespeare play.
