Shailene Woodley<\/strong><\/a> made a rare comment about her friendship with former costar Ansel Elgort<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnsel Elgort is to this day one of my best friends,\u201d Woodley, 34, said in an interview with Variety<\/em> shared via the outlet\u2019s YouTube page<\/a> on Thursday, May 21. \u201cI feel like he transcends the label of best friend. He is like family to me. I love him so, so deeply.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodley and Elgort, 32, worked together on both The Fault in Our Stars<\/em> and the Divergent<\/em> films. They met for the first time on the set of the first Divergent<\/em> film, which premiered in 2014. Woodley and Elgort played siblings Tris and Caleb, respectively. As they got to know each other on set, they formed a fast friendship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we were doing the first divergent movie, we really connected, and we became sort of instant siblings,\u201d she recalled on Thursday, \u201cThe dynamic between us is always very sweet, and it was very supportive, and he would come over to my house, and we would cook and just talk for hours after work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThese actors have enjoyed working with one another so much that they continued to score roles in the same projects. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling had perfect onscreen chemistry in projects like Crazy, Stupid, Love, Gangster Squad and La La Land, which inspired a real friendship between the pair. \u201cI can\u2019t even imagine what my [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After working on that movie, Woodley and Elgort reunited to star in the 2014 movie The Fault in Our Stars<\/em>, where they ended up playing love interests Hazel and Gus, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard he was auditioning for Fault in Our Stars<\/em>. I was like \u2018Oh that\u2019s sweet, but like obviously it\u2019s never gonna happen because he\u2019s my brother in Divergent<\/em>, like there\u2019s no world where [that happens] \u2026 And then he was cast,\u201d she said. \u201cYou know, he\u2019s kind of the only person on Earth who could\u2019ve played Gus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodley explained that her and Elgort\u2019s real-life connection made their characters\u2019 chemistry stronger on screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think actually what made our relationship in that movie as tender as it was and as truly like unconditionally loving as it was [because] Ansel and I do genuinely love one another,\u201d she shared. \u201cIt\u2019s so rare that you get to see love explored without intimacy, and although there is intimacy between Hazel and Gus, the core of it is just unconditional love. It\u2019s two people walking each other home. It\u2019s two people who have a desire to only be supportive to one another, and make the other person feel a little less lonely in a chaotic world.\u201d<\/p>\n
