The Dominican artist paints hallucinatory, richly coloured visions of island landscapes in an exploration of mysticism, ecology and\u00a0Caribbean identity.<\/p>\n

Lewis Hammond<\/strong>

This young English artist deals in dark, penumbral, cryptic portraiture. In this exhibition of new works, he\u2019s taken inspiration from all the classics \u2013 Caravaggio, Vel\u00e1zquez, Goya \u2013 creating old master-inspired, mythological paintings of modern anxieties.<\/p>\n

Jo<\/strong>anna Piotrowska
<\/strong>The Common Guild, Glasgow, <\/em>23 May<\/em> to 18 July
<\/em>Piotrowska\u2019s approach to photography is all about close-cropped intensity, ambiguous poses and harsh contrast, creating fraught, psychologically charged images she calls \u201csocial landscapes\u201d. This exhibition will also\u00a0feature collages, nudes and landscapes, all as fragmented and tortured as the rest of her work.<\/p>\n

Winston Churchill: The Painter<\/strong>

When he wasn\u2019t leading Britain through wars, drinking vast amounts of booze or single-handedly attempting to keep the Cuban cigar industry alive, Winston Churchill liked to pass the time by painting. Artistic director Alan Cumming opens his inaugural season with the award-winning musical Once, adapted so beautifully by Enda Walsh. If it seems odd that Anna Maxwell Martin hasn\u2019t before starred in a big shiny streamer series then it\u2019s an oversight that\u2019s now been rectified. She plays a\u00a0merciless KGB chief in this For All Mankind spin-off, which covers an alternative-history space race from the\u00a0USSR\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n

Spider-Noir<\/strong>

Not much can combat superhero fatigue, but Nicolas Cage playing an alternate universe Spider-Man in 1930s\u00a0New York \u2013 a role he describes as \u201c70% Bogart and 30% Bugs Bunny\u201d \u2013 will surely draw a crowd. Brendan Gleeson joins as villain Silvermane. RA<\/em><\/p>\n

Created amid a period of depression, Radiohead guitarist O\u2019Brien\u2019s second\u00a0solo album unfurls slowly, with\u00a0its first\u00a0two tracks \u2013 the disquieting Incantations and the string-drenched title track \u2013 stretching out to nearly 15\u00a0minutes. As with his band\u2019s oeuvre, it favours patience as opposed to quick thrills.<\/p>\n

After scoring their commercial breakthrough with 2002\u2019s Hi-Fi Serious, the NME-anointed \u201cBritrock sluggers\u201d failed to capitalise and went on hiatus. Despite touring sporadically since 2007, this is their first album in 21 years. Songs such as the clattering Hello Sunshine and the bouncy Walkover show their energy levels haven\u2019t dipped.<\/p>\n

<\/em>Inspired to start creating again after the death of local Portland folk legend Michael Hurley, The seventh solo album of aching Americana by Diane \u2013 her first in four years \u2013 feels lovingly well-worn. Highlight California mixes steel guitar with a whistled chorus, while the lovely Dusty Roses showcases her mellifluous voice. MC<\/em><\/p>\n
