And farther down the page, I\u2019ll reveal the themes and the answers. I give them all away below.<\/p>\n The yellow grouping is considered to be the most straightforward. The theme for today\u2019s yellow group is FARM FIXTURES and the words are: COOP, PEN, SHED, STABLE.<\/p>\n The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today\u2019s green category is LABOR PROTEST ACTIONS and the words are: MARCH, PICKET, RALLY, STRIKE.<\/p>\n The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today\u2019s blue category is OBJECTS USED IN RITUAL PERFORMANCES and the words are: DRUM, MASK, RATTLE, STAFF.<\/p>\n The purple grouping is considered to be the hardest. The theme for today\u2019s purple category is POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES PLUS A LETTER and the words are: HERB, HISS, ITSY, MYA.<\/p>\n Maybe COOP, SHED, PEN, and STABLE go together as structures for farm animals. \ud83d\udfe8<\/p>\n STRIKE and RALLY could go together as forms of demonstration. Maybe MARCH, too?\u00a0<\/p>\n I\u2019m not sure what to do with MYA. Is that a name? An acronym?<\/p>\n STRIKE, RATTLE, and HISS could be snake actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n Oh, PICKET is probably what goes with STRIKE, RALLY, and MARCH. \ud83d\udfe9<\/p>\n ITSY just makes me think of the phrase \u201cITSY-bitsy,\u201d but I don\u2019t see anything else like that on the board. I feel like ITSY and MYA might both be missing letters.<\/p>\n DRUM, STAFF, RATTLE, and MASK could go together, but I\u2019m not entirely sure why\u2014things on sticks? No. Things you shake? Not really. I\u2019m out of ideas, so let\u2019s try it. \ud83d\udfe6 Huh, that\u2019s an odd one.<\/p>\n That leaves ITSY, MYA, HERB, and HISS. Oh, they all start with possessive words: Its, my, her, his. \ud83d\udfea<\/p>\n I have a full guide to playing Connections<\/u><\/a>, but here\u2019s a refresher on the rules:<\/p>\n First, find the Connections game either on the New York Times website<\/a> or in their Games app<\/a> (formerly the Crossword app). You\u2019ll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your job is to select a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists<\/em>: bucket list, guest list, and so on).<\/p>\n Select four items and hit the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you\u2019ll get a chance to try again.<\/p>\n You win when you\u2019ve correctly identified all four groups. But if you make four mistakes before you finish, the game ends and the answers are revealed.<\/p>\n The most important thing to know to win Connections is that the groupings are designed to be tricky. Expect to see overlapping groups. For example, one puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON turned out to be part of a group of painters<\/a> along with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come by the dozen (along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). So don\u2019t hit \u201csubmit\u201d until you\u2019ve confirmed that your group of four contains only<\/em> those four things.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re stuck, another strategy is to look at the words that seem to have no<\/em> connection to the others. If all that comes to mind when you see WHISTLER is the painting nicknamed \u201cWhistler\u2019s Mother,\u201d<\/a> you might be on to something. When I solved that one, I ended up googling whether there was a painter named Close, because Close didn\u2019t fit any of the obvious themes, either.<\/p>\n Another way to win when you\u2019re stuck is, obviously, to read a few helpful hints\u2013which is why we share these pointers every day.
