It marked 10 years since DownSound Entertainment assumed stewardship of Reggae Sumfest.

Entertainment stakeholders, members of the Jamaican diaspora, media personalities, influencers and music insiders gathered at Komodo restaurant in Brickell for the festival’s official international launch event, which celebrated both the upcoming staging and the organisation’s decade-long journey with the brand.

“Tonight is special for many reasons,” Bogdanovich told guests. “Not only are we building excitement for another incredible staging of Sumfest, but this year also marks 10 years since DownSound took over the festival, a milestone we are extremely proud of.”

Since assuming leadership in 2016, Bogdanovich said the organisation has worked relentlessly to elevate the festival into a world-class entertainment product while preserving the authenticity and spirit of Jamaican music and culture.

The high-energy evening also served as the official international promotional launch for this year’s staging of A Taste of Reggae Sumfest, set for Plantation Cove in St Ann. Guests were treated to an immersive celebration of Jamaican music, culture and entertainment, with dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel making an appearance as one of the event’s major headliners.

Bogdanovich stressed that beyond entertainment, Sumfest continues to play a vital economic role for Jamaica, particularly during a period of national rebuilding following the devastation caused by Category 5 Hurricane Melissa last October.

“The festival creates employment and opportunity for thousands of Jamaicans – from vendors and hoteliers to drivers, production crews, stylists, security personnel, creatives and small business owners,” he said. “Sumfest has become an important engine for tourism and economic activity in Montego Bay and Jamaica as a whole.”

He added that the Miami launch further highlighted the enduring relationship between Jamaica and its diaspora community.

“Miami has always been one of our strongest markets because the people here understand the culture, live the culture and continue to support Jamaican music globally,” he said.

Addressing attendees during the launch, Jamaica’s Consul General to the Southeastern United States, Oliver Mair, praised the longstanding relationship between Reggae Sumfest and the Jamaican diaspora community in South Florida, affectionately referred to by many Jamaicans as ‘Kingston 21’.

“Every July, thousands of us plan our vacations, our family visits, and even our work schedules around Sumfest,” he said. “We descend on Montego Bay with joy and anticipation, ready to immerse ourselves in the rich cultural experience that only Reggae Sumfest can deliver.”

Mair also acknowledged the significance of this year’s staging following Hurricane Melissa, which severely damaged the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex, the longtime home of the festival, forcing organisers to relocate the event.

“It would have been entirely understandable if the team had decided to pause this year’s staging,” Mair said, while noting that Jamaicans across South Florida and the wider diaspora watched the devastation unfold “with heavy hearts”.

He said the eventual announcement of A Taste of Reggae Sumfest at Plantation Cove was met with “joy and gratitude”, describing the event as “a powerful statement of hope, creativity and Jamaican determination”.

During the evening, the consul general presented a special citation to the Reggae Sumfest team in recognition of the festival’s cultural impact and continued global success.

Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange also sent remarks which were shared during the launch, reminding attendees that while this year’s staging may look different, the spirit of Reggae Sumfest remains unchanged.

“When one thinks of Reggae Sumfest, one immediately thinks of the beautiful and welcoming city of Montego Bay,” Grange said. “Montego Bay was one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Melissa, and although the national recovery continues at pace, some infrastructures such as Catherine Hall are not yet ready to deliver the kind of experience for which Jamaica is known.”

This year’s event has been condensed from its traditional week-long format into a single-night experience.

“Those are major changes,” Grange noted, “but what will not change is the unique energy and vibrant performances at Reggae Sumfest, the greatest reggae show on earth.”

She also commended organisers for using this year’s staging to support western Jamaica’s recovery while reassuring international visitors that Jamaica remains ready to welcome the world.

“As a nation, we have gone through the biggest disaster in our modern history, but we are resilient, we’re building stronger, and we are eager to welcome you to our shores,” she said.

Vybz Kartel also saluted the organisers, artistes and fans for continuing to champion Jamaican culture globally.

“Big up the fans dem weh forward out fi represent fi di culture, fi di movement, fi di history, fi di blood, di sweat, the tears and fi di success of weh we call reggae and weh we call dancehall… one Jamaica,” Kartel said in a video posted to social media.

With international excitement already building, the countdown to A Taste of Reggae Sumfest 2026 is officially underway.

<p
