Katie Aselton faced several sizable challenges with the dramatic storytelling that is at the heart of her \u201cMagic Hour\u201d movie.<\/p>\n
She began by collaborating on the script with her husband, the writer-producer-actor-director Mark Duplass, and then proceeded to direct and star in a picture that\u2019s virtually a two-hander.<\/p>\n
\u201cMagic Hour\u201d refers to the moments before the sun sets or rises when a soft glow can be captured by photographers or filmmakers.\u00a0\u00a0Here, it\u2019s literally the magical time when Aselton\u2019s Erin has intense if imaginary conversations with her great love (Daveed Diggs), now dead.<\/p>\n
As Erin, Aselton, 47, is formidable with heartbreak, tears and agony that, nearly nonstop, carries the film \u2014 and she did it by also directing.<\/p>\n
How?<\/p>\n
\u201cThe truth is,\u201d she said in a Zoom interview, \u201cit takes like triple the prep it would take if you\u2019re just directing. Because you want to have all of the conversations with the D.P. (Director of Photography) and your producers and the A.D. (Assistant Director). You want to have everyone on the same page, knowing exactly what the goal is in the scene.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo on the day I can just look up and say, Did we get it? And they can very honestly look at me and say, \u2018No, go again.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
As for the other actors, \u201cIt really is like I never direct,\u201d she explained. \u201cI don\u2019t call Action! and Cut! when I\u2019m in a scene \u2013the A.D. takes care of that. Generally I keep the set experience sacred for the actors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Was \u201cMagic Hour\u201d inspired by a psychological questioning? An actual experience?<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was inspired by Mark and my own codependency,\u201d she answered. \u201cHow we\u2019ve always been codependent since the very impetus of our relationship. And how, really, that word has got such a stink on it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has such a negative connotation! But we love it. It\u2019s also the thing that we strive for in our lives, right?<\/p>\n
\u201cYou want to find the love that is so big you can\u2019t live without it. So, we joke that we want to rebrand \u2018codependency\u2019 into something really good.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause it kind of is.\u201d<\/p>\n
This testament from a couple that, she revealed, \u201cWe\u2019re about to have our 20th wedding anniversary in August. We\u2019ve been together for a total of 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking back, was there a moment they knew this?<\/p>\n
\u201cI will say, the moment that I met him the earth shifted. There was just something very deep inside me that was, \u2018Omigod!\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not to say it\u2019s always been easy. It\u2019s a relationship! We were two very different people when we met.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I do think that, like chemically speaking, my body did something when I met him.\u201d<\/p>\n
