One of her choker-style emerald and<br \/>\ndiamond necklaces has become one of the most iconic pieces in the<br \/>\njewellery box and it was brought right into the 21st century by the<br \/>\nPrincess of Wales.<\/p>\n<p>However, it began life over a century earlier when it became a<br \/>\nfavourite piece of Queen Mary. Mary loved jewels and was given some<br \/>\nstunning pieces. Her grandmother, Augusta, had won the<br \/>\nCambridge emeralds in a lottery and left them to her own daughter,<br \/>\nMary Adelaide in her will.<\/p>\n<p>The spectacular emeralds were then passed on to the future-Queen<br \/>\nMary\u2019s brother who then left them to his mistress. The Queen chose<br \/>\nto buy the emeralds back for \u00a310,000 in 1910.\u00a0In 1911, Queen<br \/>\nMary had Garrard use the emeralds in several different pieces. She gave it<br \/>\nto her daughter-in-law, Diana, on her marriage in 1981. Diana,<br \/>\nPrincess of Wales wore the choker often. However, Diana, ever a<br \/>\ncreative dresser, chose to wear the choker as a headband one<br \/>\noccasion. In 1984, while in Australia she wore it as a bandeau<br \/>\nacross the forehead, leading to one of the most iconic modern royal<br \/>\nphotos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The choker returned to the Royal Family on Diana\u2019s death in<br \/>\n1997. It wasn\u2019t worn for over 20 years but in 2022, the new<br \/>\nPrincess of Wales wore it for a major event. Catherine chose it for<br \/>\nthe green carpet at the Earthshot Awards held in the US.
