{"id":2431260,"date":"2026-05-25T11:51:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T11:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2431260"},"modified":"2026-05-25T11:51:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T11:51:00","slug":"bravos-in-the-city-backlash-misses-what-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/bravos-in-the-city-backlash-misses-what-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Bravo&#8217;s &#8216;In The City&#8217; Backlash Misses What Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>The premiere of Bravo\u2019s \u201cIn The City,\u201d a \u201cSummer House\u201d spinoff, is one of the best series debuts I\u2019ve seen in a long time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>The series follows original \u201cSummer House\u201d cast members Lindsay Hubbard, Kyle Cooke and Amanda Batula as they navigate the next phases of adulthood in New York City alongside a bevy of new friends. In Bravo-specific terms, it\u2019s on par with the launch of \u201cVanderpump Rules,\u201d because, similar to how that show was born as a backdoor pilot on \u201cThe Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,\u201d the \u201cSummer House\u201d finale allowed for a near-seamless roll into the \u201cIn The City\u201d pilot. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><em>Near-<\/em>seamless because, as any \u201cSummer House\u201d viewer knows by now, the idea of Amanda hooking up with fellow cast member West Wilson, the ex-boyfriend of her supposed bestie and co-worker Ciara Miller, blew everyone\u2019s mind and threw everything into chaos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>So much so that seconds after we watch the \u201cIn The City\u201d cast roll into Manhattan, we have to jump ahead to April 9 to watch Kyle and Amanda discuss recent events and whether she had been checked out of their marriage while they were filming this spinoff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>In sum, Amanda continues to mumble and play dumb about the betrayal and behavior caught on camera, and Kyle, while no saint, is heartbroken yet continues to try to shield her from the backlash. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Following that awkward moment, the show rewinds seven months to where it was designed to begin, as we join Lindsay in her gorgeous, spacious apartment with her daughter Gemma, whose face we are now allowed to see.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"cli cli-image js-no-inject\">\n<div class=\"img-sized\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e213e1400000e8d0286db.jpg?ops=scalefit_720_noupscale&amp;format=webp 1x, https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e213e1400000e8d0286db.jpg?ops=scalefit_1440&amp;format=webp 2x\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-image__source-wrapper\"><figcaption class=\"cli-image__caption caption-cli\">Lindsay Hubbard and Kyle Cooke on &#8220;In The City.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lindsay, an influencer, is the kind of person meant not only to be on reality television but to also be the center of this kind of aspirational series set in NYC. Among this crew are doctors, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and, naturally, hopeless romantics. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cIn The City\u201d premiere features an interesting collective and also offers a more interesting presentation of New York itself than the past few seasons of the rebooted \u201cThe Real Housewives of New York.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The network, seeing the success of \u201cThe Valley,\u201d wanted to find its East Coast counterpart, and \u201cIn The City\u201d is a more inspiring counterbalance.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, when the trailer for \u201cIn The City\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bravotv.com\/the-daily-dish\/in-the-city-season-1-trailer-premiere-date-cast-details-spoilers\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"debuted\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a0e1ef1e4b0ceb40d49392b\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.bravotv.com\/the-daily-dish\/in-the-city-season-1-trailer-premiere-date-cast-details-spoilers\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debuted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last month, there were complaints about the apparent lack of diversity in the cast. These complaints won\u2019t be quelled by the premiere.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow can a show set in NYC not feature more people of color?\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I always want to see every type of person on television, I\u2019m largely not among the crowd clamoring for representation in every social circle on a reality show. This criticism obscures the reality that Americans don\u2019t co-mingle as much as some TV shows suggest. NYC may be the most populous and diverse city in the nation, but it\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/26\/nyregion\/school-segregation-new-york.html\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"long been a symbol of school segregation\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a0e1ef1e4b0ceb40d49392b\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/03\/26\/nyregion\/school-segregation-new-york.html\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long been a symbol of school segregation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s not often said on these shows and in everyday conversation is that it requires a certain level of social mobility and economic means to be included in the friend groups featured on Bravo. And in America writ large. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, I\u2019m not shocked that the first Black person I saw on \u201cIn The City\u201d was Lindsay\u2019s nanny, Liz, because it\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/black-nannies-nyc\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"what I saw all the time\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a0e1ef1e4b0ceb40d49392b\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/black-nannies-nyc\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what I saw all the time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when I lived in NYC myself. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair to Lindsay, she also has another Black male friend who seems to be at least partially involved with the show. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yeah, there are other Black people on \u201cIn The City,\u201d and just as unsurprisingly, they\u2019re Black men like Kenny Martin, who used to work on Wall Street and is now a venture capitalist. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"cli cli-image js-no-inject\">\n<div class=\"img-sized\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e2148160000693dc18c66.jpg?cache=InEOnvjeVu&amp;ops=scalefit_720_noupscale&amp;format=webp 1x, https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e2148160000693dc18c66.jpg?cache=InEOnvjeVu&amp;ops=scalefit_1440&amp;format=webp 2x\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"Kenny Martin, Danielle Olivera, Eoin Heavey, Lindsay Hubbard on &quot;In The City.&quot;\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e2148160000693dc18c66.jpg?cache=InEOnvjeVu&amp;ops=scalefit_720_noupscale\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e2148160000693dc18c66.jpg?cache=InEOnvjeVu&amp;ops=scalefit_720_noupscale 1x, https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/6a0e2148160000693dc18c66.jpg?cache=InEOnvjeVu&amp;ops=scalefit_1440 2x\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"cli-image__source-wrapper\"><figcaption class=\"cli-image__caption caption-cli\">Kenny Martin, Danielle Olivera, Eoin Heavey, Lindsay Hubbard on &#8220;In The City.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>He is a friend of Kyle\u2019s who initially invested in Kyle\u2019s beverage company, Lover Boy. Kenny is dating Whitney Fransway, a former \u201cBachelor\u201d contestant, who moved cross-country to live with him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>When Kenny meets Lindsay and shares this revelation, she notes that it\u2019s a big deal for a woman to move across the country to be with a man without an engagement. Kenny disagrees and intimates that her opinions are rooted in male-bashing. Lindsay basically sees Kenny\u2019s lack of commitment to Whitney for what it is, and it makes for good television that feels genuine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>I\u2019m not looking for representation in every corner of reality television because I don\u2019t believe it authentically exists. All too often, when it is forced, Black viewers are subjected to watching Black cast members be placed in hostile situations with no real chance at remedy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>See the most recent season of \u201cSouthern Hospitality,\u201d where Emmy Sharrett, a white woman, falsely accused Bradley Carter, a Black man, of \u201cmaking her feel unsafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>As satisfying as it was to see the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DXficnqgUdS\/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"clip\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a0e1ef1e4b0ceb40d49392b\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DXficnqgUdS\/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\">clip<\/a> of Bradley\u2019s girlfriend, Julia, having a white woman to white woman moment in which she branded Sharrett a \u201cwhite, privileged-ass bitch,\u201d it is never entertaining to watch Black people be subjected to prejudice. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>I don\u2019t expect that from \u201cIn The City,\u201d though the absence of Black women is hard to miss.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Having said that, I\u2019d rather the network revisit previous franchises like \u201cBlood, Sweat, and Heels\u201d and offer viewers another shot at watching dynamic Black women navigate <em>their<\/em> New York City. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>We see predominantly Black casts on Bravo through \u201cThe Real Housewives of Atlanta,\u201d \u201cThe Real Housewives of Potomac\u201d and \u201cMarried To Medicine,\u201d but we\u2019re not seeing enough Black shows on Bravo on par with \u201cIn The City.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Black casts have delivered some of Bravo\u2019s most compelling television for years. What we haven\u2019t been given enough of is the real estate to match.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>I will enjoy \u201cIn The City,\u201d but I understand the frustration some viewers will not be able to shake about it, even if I find that anger misplaced. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p><em>\u201cIn The City\u201d airs on Bravo on Tuesdays.
