{"id":2432166,"date":"2026-05-26T04:33:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T04:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2432166"},"modified":"2026-05-26T04:33:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T04:33:50","slug":"anthony-volpe-saves-yankees-from-brutal-loss-in-comeback-win-over-royals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/anthony-volpe-saves-yankees-from-brutal-loss-in-comeback-win-over-royals\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Volpe saves Yankees from brutal loss in comeback win over Royals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>KANSAS CITY, Mo. \u2014 Anthony Volpe is playing to earn his keep.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, that involved keeping the Yankees from another tough loss.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Jos\u00e9 Caballero came off the injured list, Volpe started at shortstop and ended up saving the day, delivering a two-run single in the top of the ninth to lift the Yankees to a 4-3 win over the Royals in a Memorial Day matinee at Kauffman Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>After Bobby Witt Jr. had put the Royals ahead with a solo shot off Jake Bird in the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees (32-22) staged a one-out rally capped by Volpe, who has gone from October shoulder surgery to losing his job to being optioned to Triple-A to coming back up and now making a consistent impact through his first nine games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just felt great to contribute and help the team win \u2014 that\u2019s all I\u2019ve ever wanted to do,\u201d Volpe said. \u201cThat was all I wanted to do when I was working and grinding to come back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do it for this, for the guys. Everyone in this clubhouse does absolutely everything they can to come through and help the team win. Jazz Chisholm Jr. came up next and roped a hustle double past the dive of first baseman Salvador Perez.<\/p>\n<p>That set the stage for Volpe, and, with the infield in, he lofted a single over the head of Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop to put the Yankees ahead.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption> Yankees pitcher Will Warren (29) pitches during the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.  <span class=\"credit\">IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>David Bednar then closed it out in the bottom of the ninth, working around a two-out walk, as the Yankees took the series opener from the Royals (22-32).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, it was time to win the game,\u201d said Chisholm, who tweaked his right ankle rounding first but said he was OK. \u201cEnd of the game, we never quit, we never give in. Cody Bellinger drilled a leadoff home run in the second inning before Caballero drove in Volpe for the two-run lead, but the Yankees stranded a runner at third base in each of the next two innings before getting shut down for a stretch.<\/p>\n<p>That changed in the ninth, though, with Volpe playing hero and offering up his latest forget-me-not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a dawg. He\u2019s a gamer. He\u2019s a tough kid,\u201d Boone said. \u201cCertainly [losing his job] isn\u2019t the way he would draw it up or maybe even doesn\u2019t feel that\u2019s fair \u2014 whatever it may be \u2014 but the one thing he does is continue to work his tail off and play his tail off.
