Paul McCartney<\/a> has been interviewed by his Beatles<\/a> biopic counterpart,\u00a0Paul Mescal<\/a>. Watch below.<\/p>\n The chat comes ahead of Macca\u2019s new album \u2018The Boys Of Dungeon Lane<\/a>\u2019,\u00a0 which arrives on May 29 (pre-order\u00a0here<\/a>), and has so far been previewed by \u2018Days We Left Behind<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018Home To Us<\/a>\u2019 \u2013 his first duet with Ringo Starr<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mescal, who plays McCartney in Sam Mendes\u2019 upcoming four-film series about the Fab Four, sat down with the music icon for\u00a0In Conversation<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 an exclusive short film shared by Amazon.<\/p>\n Opening the 10-minute chat, Mescal asks McCartney:\u00a0\u201cHow do you feel about being interviewed?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt depends if I like the person. Which is where we\u2019re running into a problem already,\u201d McCartney joked. \u201cNo, I find if I like who I\u2019m being interviewed by, it comes easy.\u201d<\/p>\n Mescal goes on to ask McCartney about his songwriting process on \u2018The Boys of Dungeon Lane\u2019, noting that the lyrics feature memories but still exist \u201cin the present tense.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI haven\u2019t got a formula,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cThey used to ask me and John [Lennon]<\/a>, \u2018How\u2019d you do it? Who writes the music, who writes the words?\u2019 I don\u2019t know. To me, I think any story or song you\u2019re gonna do, it\u2019s gotta involve memory. With the Beatles, we always tried to write something different.\u201d<\/p>\n Mescal then asked McCartney about \u2018Salesman Saint\u2019, a new song on the album written about McCartney\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n \u201cI often remember that my mom and dad had me in World War 2. I\u2019ve always known that growing up, but at a certain point you go \u2018Wow,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cIt occurred to me that it\u2019d be good to just put down some stuff about them carrying on through whatever they had to put up with.\u201d<\/p>\n Mescal then asked McCartney about the actor\u2019s \u201cfavourite\u201d song on the album, the first single \u2018Days We Left Behind\u2019, which alludes to his time with Lennon.<\/p>\n \u201cThe collaboration you had with them all and the relationship you had with John, it\u2019s such a full, brilliant, complicated thing, and where\u2019s your heart with all of that now? They\u2019re currently slated for an April 2028 release.<\/p>\n Speaking about the films in January,\u00a0Mescal said fans would \u201cbenefit from knowing as little as possible\u201d about them<\/a>\u00a0before watching them.\u00a0\u201cI think the\u00a0endeavour\u00a0is totally singular,\u201d he added. \u201cOn a personal level, I\u2019m so thrilled to be working on something at this\u00a0scale, but\u00a0also rooted in performance with Sam and great writers.\u201d<\/p>\n He had previously revealed that he would be doing his own singing for the role and had spent time with McCartney to prepare<\/a>.<\/p>\n McCartney later playfully touched on Mescal\u2019s aptness for the role<\/a>. During his appearance on the last ever episode of\u00a0The\u00a0Late Show\u00a0<\/i>last week \u2013\u00a0in which he sang a duet of \u2018Hello, Goodbye\u2019 with host Stephen Colbert before switching off the lights for good at the Ed Sullivan Theatre<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 he was asked who was cuter out of the two of them.<\/p>\n McCartney simply grinned and pointed at himself. \u201cMe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n After the crowd applauded, McCartney made clear that he was being tongue-in-cheek, adding: \u201cNo,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0very cute, he\u2019s very cute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
