When I point out that younger audiences have been rediscovering her work, she smiles.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t realize that there was so much crossbreeding there, but that\u2019s fabulous,\u201d she says. \u201cI love that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some fans tell her they picked up sports because of A League of Their Own<\/em>. Others know her from her role on Grey’s Anatomy<\/em>. \u201cA lot of teenagers say, \u2018Are you Dr. Herman?\u2019\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\nOne thing that still surprises her: Thelma & Louise<\/em> lives on<\/strong><\/h2>\nThirty-five years after Thelma & Louise<\/em>, Davis still seems genuinely surprised that audiences continue to appreciate it.<\/p>\nWhenever an anniversary rolls around, she says she and costar Susan Sarandon usually find themselves celebrating again.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we\u2019re like, this is just living on,\u201d she says, pausing. \u201cNobody realized at that time that movies were going to have this long life! So it\u2019s kind of fabulous that people are still watching the movies for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n
One thing she\u2019s still waiting for: More stories about women her age<\/strong><\/h2>\nFor Davis, part of getting older isn\u2019t just becoming more comfortable with herself \u2014 it\u2019s finally seeing characters her age take up space.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s part of what stood out to her about The Boroughs<\/em>, which doesn\u2019t treat its older cast as background characters, comic relief or symbols of decline. Instead, the retirement community at the center of the show becomes a place where people are still falling in love, making mistakes, chasing excitement and, occasionally, fighting monsters.<\/p>\n\u201cThe fact that this show is about older characters \u2014 that there\u2019s six main characters who are sort of around their 70s \u2014 so it [is] fantastic,\u201d Davis says.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the point. We get to be heroic and brave and all those things that you would presume a younger character would be.\u201d<\/p>\n
But despite decades in Hollywood \u2014 and years advocating for representation through the Geena Davis Institute \u2014 she says age remains one of the industry\u2019s biggest blind spots.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor women over 50 being represented, we have a long way to go,\u201d she says. \u201d<\/p>\n
At the same time, Davis says she\u2019s encouraged by places where progress is visible.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have made tremendous progress since we started this with female characters \u2014 and particularly in kids\u2019 entertainment,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve really reached parity now, which is phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n
With The Boroughs<\/em>, she says she finally got the kind of story she\u2019d been hoping to see.<\/p>\n\u201cThis show is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
