Gayle King<\/strong><\/a> reflected on the discovery that her ex-husband, William G. Bumpus<\/strong>, was having an affair with her close friend.<\/p>\n

King, 71, recalled on the Wednesday, May 27, episode of the \u201cCall Her Daddy\u201d podcast<\/a> that she unexpectedly returned home in June 1990 after a flight was canceled, but Bumpus told her she couldn\u2019t come in the house.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe alarm was set, which I thought, \u2018That\u2019s strange, because you\u2019re in here by yourself,\u2019\u201d King said. \u201cYou\u2019re a big ass, grown ass man. He never sets the alarm. And next thing I know, he comes flying out of the room and he\u2019s got a towel on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bumpus told her \u201cthere\u2019s somebody in\u201d the house. King said she was \u201cso oblivious\u201d to what was going on and started \u201csearching the house\u201d to understand what he was talking about.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t believe him,\u201d she admitted. \u201cI get down and there they are \u2014 or there she is cowering behind the door in my towel. It was a nice bath sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n

King laughed while remembering how she sounded \u201cso pitiful\u201d while confronting them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018I can\u2019t believe that you are here and that you are doing this,\u2019\u201d she recalled. (Bumpus publicly apologized for cheating in a 2016 statement<\/a> to Entertainment Tonight<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

King and Bumpus\u2019 kids were protected from the situation because they stayed outside with their nanny. This also helped the broadcaster stay composed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking, \u2018The kids are here, I don\u2019t want anybody to know,\u2019\u201d she added. \u201cThat was my main thought, \u2018I don\u2019t want anybody to know.\u2019 That would not happen to me today.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI kept thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t want it to be a scene,\u2019 because they\u2019re little, they know this person. My main thing was how do I \u2014 which is what I do about most things \u2014 how do I handle this situation in this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

King even called her friend\u2019s husband, who claimed that she \u201cdrew the wrong conclusion\u201d about what happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod, I haven\u2019t told all these details,\u201d King said, laughing. \u201cThis is not good.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was also a moment between her friend, who remained unnamed, and Bumpus that took place before the affair was revealed. Looking back, King said that stands out in her mind as a red flag.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always say if I was writing a book, the first line in my book would be, \u2018Whack,\u2019 the sound of a tennis ball. She said, \u2018Nice shot, Bill.\u2019 The way she said it, there was such an intimacy in her voice,\u201d King recalled. \u201cThe hair stood up on the back of my neck and I thought, \u2018Why am I feeling that way?\u2019 It was weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

King confronted Bumpus about it, but he allegedly tried to \u201cgaslight\u201d her, and she chalked it up to \u201coverreacting\u201d about the entire interaction.<\/p>\n
