{"id":2434529,"date":"2026-05-27T18:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2434529"},"modified":"2026-05-27T18:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:30:00","slug":"tinie-tempah-talks-new-music-and-protecting-grassroots-venues-its-our-duty-as-the-british-population","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/tinie-tempah-talks-new-music-and-protecting-grassroots-venues-its-our-duty-as-the-british-population\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinie Tempah talks new music and protecting grassroots venues: \u201cIt\u2019s our duty as the British population\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/tinie-tempah\">Tinie Tempah<\/a> has opened up to <em>NME<\/em> about being committed to supporting the UK\u2019s grassroots venues, and plans to drop what could be his first new album in nearly 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The London singer, rapper and producer caught up with us on the red carpet for the 2026 Ivor Novellos, where he is a member of the Ivors board and works to \u201ccontinue to uplift and promote and protect songwriters\u201d across the country.<\/p>\n<p>He was awarded his own trophy back in 2011 after winning in the Best Contemporary Song category for his hit debut single, \u2018Pass Out\u2019, which he recorded alongside <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/labrinth\">Labrinth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about how the industry has changed since then, the rapper \u2013 real name Patrick Okogwu \u2013 explained how he and countless others owe their success to the grassroots venues across the country.<\/p>\n<p>As a longtime supporter of the Music Venue Trust and their efforts to help protect grassroots gig spaces, Tempah has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/music-venue-trust-and-the-national-lottery-announce-first-line-up-for-nationwide-glastonbury-replacement-festival-everywhere-at-once-3944859\">joined their bill for Everywhere At Once<\/a> \u2013 a festival taking place at hundreds of vital venues across the UK next month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why is the Music Venue Trust&amp;apos;s cause so close to Tinie Tempah&amp;apos;s heart?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gXkvaG98zPU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think about my time coming up, I think about the 10,000 hours that I put into going around the UK and performing in all the small venues from 100 capacity to 500 capacity,\u201d Tinie said. \u201cI think of all the times I got cheered, all the times I got booed, all the times there was no one there, or when there was one or two people in the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was really my rite of passage, because it helped me to build a core fan base, most of whom have stuck with me to this day,\u201d he added. \u201cObviously we now have social media and you can cast your net out into the wider world, but there is something so important about being in front of people in real life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about all the scenes that the UK has been able to bring to the forefront over the years \u2013 they typically start underground and they typically start in places and spaces like that. So if we lose these spaces, I worry for the next generation of artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cOn top of that, live music is where a lot of musicians make the lion\u2019s share of their income, so if we don\u2019t have these venues to perform in, we\u2019re screwed. Considering how much UK music has impacted around the world, it\u2019s almost our duty as the British population to preserve some of these venues and spaces. Some of them should be institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite years of hard gigging, he has not released any new music since 2020, when <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/tinie-tempah-shares-first-new-track-in-three-years-top-winners-2626527\">he dropped the single \u2018Top Winners.<\/a>\u00a0His last album was 2017\u2019s \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/tinie-tempah-youth-album-review-2045450\">Youth<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tinie Tempah teases what could be his first album since 2017\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHtJTzZm4wo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Speaking to <em>NME <\/em>at the Ivors, the \u2018Written In The Stars\u2019 singer revealed that he has finally completed work on new music with a renewed and sharpened focus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took a long hiatus and I just went to figure out my life. But I\u2019m definitely back now,\u201d he shared. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of new music coming your way. I\u2019m going to drop the project in September, so I\u2019m super excited for people to hear that and take it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of it is inspired by what I was just talking about: nightlife culture,\u201d he continued, adding that it will be an album that takes listeners \u201con a journey through the night from the start \u2013 when you even have the idea of wanting to go out \u2013 all the way to the messy 4am that we all know and we\u2019ve all experienced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m super excited for people to hear it. I\u2019ve worked super hard on it. Find remaining tickets and more information <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/everywherefest.com\/find-an-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The news of the festival\u2019s launch arrived at a vital time for the UK\u2019s live music sector, as reports show that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/music-venue-trust-report-2025-half-grassroots-no-profit-6000-jobs-lost-3924588\">30 grassroots venues were lost forever between July 2024 and July 2025<\/a> \u2013 and last year alone saw more than half of those remaining making no profit, with over 6,000 jobs lost.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently an ongoing push for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/the-ticket-levy-that-could-save-grassroots-venues-and-artists-what-happens-next-3926053\">a ticket levy to be introduced<\/a>, which would see smaller venues and rising talent across the country <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/2025-potential-game-changer-uk-grassroots-music-when-see-action-where-will-money-go-3833218\">receive a contribution from arena and stadium gigs to ensure their survival<\/a>.
