{"id":2434532,"date":"2026-05-27T18:33:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2434532"},"modified":"2026-05-27T18:33:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:33:47","slug":"body-of-work-to-debut-at-white-river-junction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/body-of-work-to-debut-at-white-river-junction\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Body of Work&#8221; to debut at White River Junction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Everlit Audio Player\" src=\"https:\/\/everlit.audio\/embeds\/artl_VaRgzSmb3RP?ui_title_icon=headphones&amp;client=wp&amp;client_version=3.1.8\" width=\"100%\" height=\"136px\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WHITE RIVER JUNCTION \u2014 Growing up in Lebanon, Rigel Harris\u2019 parents were both biology teachers, and, along with theater, science has always fascinated her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, conversations with a friend who founded a biotechnology company that grew out of Dartmouth prompted Harris to think more deeply about the moral complexities of scientific inquiry, and cancer research in particular.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often companies are \u201cso close to putting an end to this thing and they don\u2019t talk to each other because there\u2019s this race for money,\u201d Harris, 33, said in an interview in Bellows Falls, a 10-minute drive from Saxtons River, Vt., where she lives in a converted storefront.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue is a personal one for Harris, whose father died of melanoma when she was 21.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In talks with her friend, \u201cI was thinking a lot about the ways in which we get paid for work, and the kind of work we do, and it having a bit of a moral judgment attached to it,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Director Lulu Fairclough-Stewart, of Brooklyn, N.Y., left, and writer-actor Rigel Harris, right, of Saxtons River, Vt., make adjustments to Harris\u2019s script for \u201cBody of Work\u201d while preparing the performance in Saxtons River, on Tuesday, May 2, 2026. PATTERSON \/ Valley News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those questions play out in the life of Eloise, the protagonist in Harris\u2019 new show, \u201cBody of Work,\u201d which premieres next Friday at Briggs Opera House in White River Junction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A doctoral candidate at New York University, Eloise has learned to exist in double. There\u2019s the version of her that conducts potentially life-saving cancer research, and the version that works as an escort to pay her rent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neat outlines of those two worlds begin to smudge when Eloise falls in love with a man she encounters on the way to meet a client. She\u2019s afraid to reveal how she makes money, but she also can\u2019t afford to give up the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simultaneously, she learns that the lab she\u2019s part of has been fabricating data. Suddenly what was supposed to be the \u201cballast of her life,\u201d the measure of her goodness, has been thrown on its head, Harris said. PATTERSON \/ Valley News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoula work is about making people feel safe, and sex work is about making people feel safe,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That relational element of sex work is often overlooked in portrayals in pop culture, Harris said, with characters frequently written by men. Sam Levinson\u2019s sensationalizing portraits of erotic dancers and OnlyFans creators in the current season of \u201cEuphoria\u201d comes to mind. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elements of \u201cBody of Work\u201d are heavy, but Harris has also held fast to the importance of \u201chaving a good time,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of doing that has meant making the play with her pals. PATTERSON \/ Valley News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or, as Fairclough-Stewart put it: \u201cShe wanted me because I\u2019m absolutely loco.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An actor and writer living in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Fairclough-Stewart, 29, related Eloise\u2019s job at the lab to Karl Marx\u2019s theory of alienation, wherein under capitalism the worker is isolated from the product of their labor, other people and ultimately themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her participation in sex work offers an antidote. It\u2019s a space where she decides the conditions of her labor on her own terms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019s directly involved in the making of the product,\u201d Fairclough-Stewart said in a phone interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fairclough-Stewart, who works as a server and bartender in Brooklyn, is no stranger to taking on extra jobs to support her creative pursuits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce you choose to be an artist, you\u2019re relinquishing yourself to a life of trial and financial tribulation,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet that path hasn\u2019t been \u201cas hard as people told me it was going to be,\u201d she said. While supporting herself with her restaurant job, she\u2019s been able to develop independent projects such as her one-woman show \u201cCongrats to Me\u201d and the short film \u201cLost Dog,\u201d which was nominated for Best Comedy Short at the Indie Short Fest in Los Angeles earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of actors and artists wait for permission to make their art,\u201d she said. \u201cRigel and I are kind of saying f\u2013k that, we\u2019re going to pioneer our own art.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But pioneering one\u2019s own art also means finding a way to pay for it. Harris estimates it will cost about $17,000 to produce \u201cBody of Work,\u201d which includes paying her cast and crew.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt felt really important to me that we pay people,\u201d she said. Donations, including those from family and friends, have helped foot the bill, but ultimately she\u2019s on the hook for whatever\u2019s left over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Etna pop diva Kelsie Hogue, aka Sir Babygirl, also hosted a dance party at the Filling Station in White River Junction a few weeks back to raise money for the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year Harris directed Hogue\u2019s rock opera <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vnews.com\/2025\/03\/06\/queer-rock-opera-to-briggs-opera-house-59701064\/\">\u201cHow to Stay Sane While Losing Your Mind\u201d<\/a> at the Briggs. Now Hogue is helping Harris produce her own show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re so different in so many ways, but she\u2019s someone I can have really safe conversations about work with,\u201d Harris said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the spirit of having fun, Harris hopes to next take \u201cBody of Work\u201d to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a three-week extravaganza in August when thousands of artists flock to the Scottish city to perform their fledgling works for audiences and reviewers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would love nothing more than to spend some time frolicking around the city,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBody of Work\u201d is in production at Briggs Opera House at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6\u00a0 in White River Junction. The following week will see the reunion of the original cast from \u201cThe Vermont Farm Project,\u201d the agrarian musical developed in the Upper Valley that premiered at Northern Stage last year.
