The camp drew visitors from across the globe and inspired a host of environmental and community activism in the years that followed.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters opposed the crude oil pipeline over concerns about possible leaks and water supply contamination.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201cwater is life,\u201d popularized by the protest, has become shorthand for environmental concerns by those opposed to natural resource extraction projects in and outside of South Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, opponents to a Black Hills uranium exploration project placed a sign that read \u201cwater is life\u201d <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/southdakotasearchlight.com\/2026\/05\/19\/tension-grows-between-state-board-and-project-opponents-at-hearing-on-uranium-drilling-permit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">on a chair in the venue of a Hot Springs permit hearing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lineup for the inaugural \u201cPeople of the Sun\u201d event includes actors Mark Ruffalo and Shailene Woodley, the latter of whom was arrested at the protest camp in 2016, as well as the band Mumford and Sons, and Taboo, of the Black Eyed Peas.<\/p>\n<p>The event is a presentation of Indigenized Energy \u2014 a Native American-led, nonprofit solar energy company that got its start in 2017, in the wake of the protests. Its founder, Cody Two Bears, was the elected representative for Cannonball on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council at the time of the protests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter No DAPL happened, people went out there and started taking those seeds from the movement and planting them in different parts of the world,\u201d Two Bears said. \u201cYou\u2019re starting to see a lot of great things flourishing out there now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the conference side, the event will include awards for energy sovereignty to a tribe that\u2019s led the way in its pursuit of clean energy, Two Bears said, as well as individual awards for teaching, workforce development and mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to celebrate \u201cwhat we\u2019ve been doing, but also what comes next,\u201d he said, and to \u201crealign\u201d the various groups involved initially or spawned since the protests with the values that animated them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<p><h2>Picking up the pieces after funding cancellation<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Indigenized Energy was chosen in 2024 to guide <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/southdakotasearchlight.com\/2024\/04\/22\/federal-solar-power-grants-include-260-million-for-south-dakota-tribes-rural-areas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">$135.6 million in funding<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       awarded to the Northern Plains Tribal Coalition by the Biden administration for solar energy. <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/southdakotasearchlight.com\/2025\/08\/27\/cancellation-of-solar-energy-grants-is-another-broken-promise-for-tribes-recipient-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">The Trump administration canceled that funding,<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       but Two Bears said the tribes involved have largely continued to pursue the projects through philanthropy, albeit at a smaller scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s at the scale of trying to pick up the pieces to preserve what we can,\u201d said Two Bears, whose company finished a solar project for the <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/4indigenized.energy\/2025\/12\/18\/a-second-first-light-solar-for-all-comes-to-the-chippewa-cree-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Chippewa Cree Tribe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       in Montana and a home solar project in <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/4indigenized.energy\/2025\/12\/18\/looking-forward-a-landmark-solar-for-all-project-on-the-oglala-sioux-reservation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">Porcupine, South Dakota,<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       before the federal funding stream stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The company also completed, without Biden administration funding, an<\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/4indigenized.energy\/2025\/09\/16\/this-is-sovereignty-culture-energy-and-indigenous-strength\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">\u00a0off-grid solar energy project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana that powers a buffalo processing facility on the same land that hosts the tribe\u2019s buffalo herd.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the goal for the gathering in September, Two Bears said, is to generate interest and connect energy sovereignty backers with philanthropists and funders to \u201cenjoy some high-level speakers\u201d and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees of People of the Sun, he said, will be invited to see the in-progress installation of a solar system at Standing Rock, and to learn how such infrastructure can serve more than one purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s going to be a buffalo sorting unit, which is also going to provide, at some point, buffalo processing of their meat,\u201d he said. \u201cBut most importantly, it\u2019s a big solar array for when they kind of corral them up that provides shade for those buffalo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ticket prices have yet to be set, and Two Bears said the lineup could grow in the weeks and months ahead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<p><h2>&#8216;Can\u2019t get our heads down&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In late 2016, the Obama administration denied a permit for Energy Transfer Partners, the company that controls the Dakota Access Pipeline. President Donald Trump reversed that decision and cleared a path for completion of the now-operational pipeline shortly after taking office for his first term. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has continued legal challenges, but the pipeline company has withstood them, <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/southdakotasearchlight.com\/2026\/05\/21\/repub\/army-corps-grants-final-approval-for-dakota-access-pipeline-9-years-after-oil-began-flowing\/?emci=4b6f9589-6255-f111-8fcb-000d3a18905c&amp;emdi=bd730b5e-cd55-f111-8fcb-000d3a18905c&amp;ceid=5402\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">earning a permit<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       Thursday to continue operations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.<\/p>\n<p>That the Dakota Access Pipeline is operational remains a disappointment for those who opposed it, Two Bears said, but \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of great things that have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawsuits and protests shrouded Pete Lien and Sons\u2019 exploratory drilling for graphite, used in electric vehicle batteries, lubricants and pencils, in a Black Hills area considered sacred by Lakota people known as Pe\u2019 Sla.<\/p>\n<p>A judge <\/p>\n<p>      <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Link \" href=\"https:\/\/southdakotasearchlight.com\/2026\/05\/05\/opponents-win-temporary-order-against-drilling-project-near-culturally-significant-black-hills-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">granted a temporary restraining order<\/a><\/p>\n<p>       against the project earlier this month, in response to lawsuits filed by nine Native American tribes and a coalition of nonprofits.
