In some cases, buyers may not even realize they were scammed because they still receive valid tickets.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is affecting venues ranging from the Chattanooga Theatre Centre and Memorial Auditorium to The Comedy Catch and the Chattanooga Lookouts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn average ticket price here is anywhere between $20 and $30, and you\u2019ll go on these third-party sites and they\u2019re charging anywhere from $60 to, I\u2019ve seen up to $180 per ticket,\u201d said Danielle Alfano, co-owner of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecomedycatch.com\/events\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Comedy Catch<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Alfano said the practice hurts both customers and small businesses while exploiting the work of performers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re able to pop up [at the] top of the Google search list, so people are clicking that and buying their tickets,\u201d Alfano said. \u201cThen the third-party site will triple charge and go buy the tickets at the correct price, and all that extra money is going in their pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick Wilkinson, CEO of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tivolichattanooga.com\/memorial_auditorium\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tivoli Theatre Foundation<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, said the problem has existed for years and urged customers to buy tickets directly from official venue websites or box offices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate and it\u2019s very easy to do,\u201d Wilkinson said.<\/p>\n<p>Wilkinson said some third-party sellers not only inflate prices but occasionally sell illegitimate tickets.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatrecentre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chattanooga Theatre Centre<\/strong><\/a><\/span> has posted warnings on its website to alert customers about suspicious listings and inflated resale prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c$30 for a musical is suddenly $75 \u2014 that\u2019s a clue,\u201d said Kim Jackson with the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. \u201cYou\u2019re not buying a ticket to the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. You are just giving a scammer some money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/chattanooga\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chattanooga Lookouts<\/strong><\/a><\/span> are also warning fans to pay attention to unusually high prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re affordable family fun,\u201d said Andrew Zito, vice president of the Chattanooga Lookouts. \u201cWe have tickets that start at $9 and no tickets more than $20 in the building, so if you\u2019re seeing tickets for $40, $50, $60 \u2014 if something seems out of whack, it probably is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some venue leaders are now calling for stricter regulations and greater transparency for online ticket resellers.<\/p>\n<p>Alfano said she even contacted members of Congress about the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote up a letter and sent it to Congress explaining the issues, how it\u2019s affecting our community and small businesses,\u201d Alfano said. \u201cI even proposed ways to regulate them or ban them altogether.
