The influence and memory of Dan Auerbach<\/a>\u2019s father looms large over the Black Keys<\/a>\u2019 latest album Peaches!<\/em>, a collection of obscure blues and soul covers that the band recorded while Auerbach\u2019s father was in the final stages of a cancer battle. Chuck Auerbach died March 29, just a month before his son, along with Keys drummer Pat Carney, dropped the LP on May 1. In a new interview with Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2019s Nashville Now<\/em> podcast, Auerbach admits that Peaches!<\/a><\/em>, despite its ebullient nature, can be hard for him to listen to, especially the track \u201cIt\u2019s a Dream,\u201d originally cut by Charles Fisher Jr.<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like he would have loved that song. It was right up his alley. This whole life has been a bit of a dream and he helped put me here. So, that\u2019s kind of hard to listen to, but it\u2019s mostly joyous,\u201d Auerbach says, holding back tears. \u201cHe gave me so much. It was like one last gift.\u201d<\/p>\n Auerbach\u2019s Easy Eye Sound studios in Nashville, where the Black Keys recorded Peaches!<\/em>, is decorated with folk art, antiquities, and assorted vintage signs. One from a Freemasons lodge hangs above the studio floor. He was an antique dealer, a picker. I knew how to pack a van for tour because I would pack the van for my dad\u2019s antique shows. This shitty old rusty van, with a wooden rack on the top,\u201d he says, recalling how his father would crank music in the van, especially the Allman Brothers\u2019 \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man.\u201d \u201cMy dad listened to music louder than anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n In this episode of Nashville Now<\/em>, Auerbach talks at length about Gregg Allman \u2014 who died nine years<\/a> ago today \u2014 and his enduring influence not just on the Black Keys but on all of music. Auerbach produced a new live version of the Allmans\u2019 \u201cCome and Go Blues,\u201d performed by Marcus King, for the forthcoming documentary Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul<\/a><\/em>.
