Probably not, right? But I wouldn\u2019t blame you for tuning in to find out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-c502198b-0 NkURW\">\n<p>This series, adapted from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/jul\/14\/shark-celebrity-infested-waters-review-itv\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a British format<\/a> which last year featured the likes of Ross Noble, sees six local celebrities thrown into open water with sharks in the Bahamas. It\u2019s not a competition. There are no prizes to be won. Rather, the series promises a journey \u2013 with escalating challenges forcing the stars to confront their fears as well as their preconceptions about the animals.<\/p>\n<p>The cast is cleverly constructed, featuring people with varying degrees of terror. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5m9v6\">Influencer Tammy Hembrow<\/a> and former NRL player <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/thaiday-squashes-calls-for-maroons-changes-20260518-p5zy2j.html\">Sam Thaiday<\/a> are excited for the adventure. And Olympic swimmer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/tv-and-radio\/that-s-the-easy-way-out-why-olympian-ariarne-titmus-decided-to-face-her-greatest-fear-20260519-p5zym6.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ariarne Titmus is simply petrified<\/a>, trying her best to conquer a genuine phobia.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s Lynne McGranger. Fresh off her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/tv-and-radio\/lynne-mcgranger-takes-the-gold-tom-gleeson-makes-mischief-and-the-abc-cleans-up-highlights-of-the-2025-logies-20250730-p5mivu.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gold Logie win<\/a>, this former <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/tv-and-radio\/real-and-right-why-lynne-mcgranger-wanted-irene-s-home-and-away-exit-to-matter-20250813-p5mmlb.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Home and Away star<\/a> turns out to be the glue of the group. Funny, plucky and warm, it\u2019s hard not to root for this 72-year-old as she gives \u201ctoo much information\u201d about her \u201cnervous belly\u201d before her first dive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-c502198b-0 NkURW\">\n<p>Yes, you will see celebrities crying and in genuine physical peril (I can\u2019t imagine the insurance costs). But this show is striving to be more than pure spectacle. It\u2019s also intent on using these challenges to educate participants \u2013 and, in turn, viewers \u2013 on water safety, shark behaviour and the importance of these animals for local ecosystems. The former Australian Navy diver has made dozens of shows like this for the Discovery Channel over the past decade, ever since losing his right hand and leg to a bull shark in 2009. Last year he even re-created the incident for a special, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/culture\/tv-and-radio\/this-aussie-was-attacked-by-a-shark-now-he-s-recreating-it-so-you-can-watch-20250805-p5mkn5.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">How to Survive a Shark Attack<\/a> (HBO Max).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s great to see de Gelder reach a free-to-air audience here and, joined by UK conservationist Annie Guttridge, he walks the tonal tightrope well \u2013 even if the messaging can become repetitive.<\/p>\n<p>Given Australia\u2019s high rate of shark bites and fatalities, it\u2019s surprising we haven\u2019t seen something like this sooner. The show is destined to become a talking point, especially as it follows two fatal shark attacks on spear-fishers \u2013 one <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp8p5llz8ddo\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">near Rottnest Island<\/a> and another this week <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-25\/queensland-spearfisher-shark-attack-victim-identified\/106718104\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on the Great Barrier Reef<\/a> \u2013 and more calls for a cull.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-c502198b-0 NkURW\">\n<p>But if you\u2019re purely watching for the celebrity sadism, I will say \u2013 as of the first three episodes watched for this review \u2013 Scott Cam has survived.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shark! premieres at 7pm, on Sunday May 31, on Nine and 9Now.
