Bailey Falter<\/a> started for the Kansas City Royals<\/a> on Tuesday night, but he struggled immensely.<\/p>\n

The plan all along was for Falter to hand the ball over early, not go deep into the game like a traditional starter, but he ended up being pulled after 2.1 nightmare innings.<\/p>\n

Falter gave up seven runs, including three home runs, before being taken out of the game against the Yankees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And on Wednesday, the Royals designated Falter for assignment. It removes him from the 40-man roster, puts him on waivers and very well might set up his departure from the Royals.<\/p>\n

Kansas City won’t necessarily miss him. Falter has had a 13.97 ERA through five outings.<\/p>\n

It’s been a tough go for Falter, for sure.<\/p>\n

The Royals DFA’d Falter because of his subpar pitching, to be sure.<\/p>\n

His comments on Tuesday night probably didn’t help:<\/p>\n

It’s fair for Falter to have trouble getting used to a role where he’s both being a starting pitcher but also going only a couple innings at a time. That’s not something guys are brought up to be familiar with, but it’s a newer role some MLB teams have used in various opener capacities.<\/p>\n

Falter faltered, yes, but he’s still got some talent. Another team could go after him.<\/p>\n

It seems like he’d try to join a team that has a more traditional role for him, although he might have to prove himself in the minor leagues somewhere to get that kind of trust at the MLB level again.<\/p>\n
