In an <\/span>interview with Rolling Stone<\/span><\/a>, RM described this as their roots, \u201cWe are rooted in Korea; I think that\u2019s our identity.\u201d The group\u2019s record label, Big Hit Music, also described the album as capturing \u201cBTS\u2019s identity as a group that began in Korea.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But \u201cARIRANG\u201d also arrives at a time when K-pop itself is transforming. The genre is shifting toward authenticity, emotional storytelling and fan-driven meaning. BTS\u2019s new album doesn\u2019t just participate in that shift \u2013 it defines it.<\/span><\/p>\n During their <\/span>comeback press conference<\/span><\/a>, RM emphasized that the group wanted to reconnect with the cultural foundations that shaped them, and as a fan, I immediately recognized the cultural shift with the rest of ARMY.\u00a0 The animated video posted on March 12, 2026 by the BTS official Youtube channel, <\/span>BANGTANTV<\/span><\/a>, showcased a historical moment from the story of seven young Korean men in the United States at Howard University, recording the first audio of \u201cARIRANG\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n The album name and video is a reference that parallels the seven Korean men of Howard University and the seven Korean men of the K-pop boyband BTS performing in the United States. Big Hit\u2019s official album notes framed <\/span>\u201cARIRANG\u201d as a project<\/span><\/a> to \u201cresonate across generations and cultures\u201d through shared emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I really loved the impact this album had in bringing Korean culture into the mainstream. It also felt like the old BTS was here; back in the 2013-2014 hip-hop era, with their dark color contrast and rap styles.<\/span><\/p>\n Two of the most striking tracks on \u201cARIRANG\u201d, \u201cAliens\u201d and \u201cNo. 29\u201d, show just how intentionally BTS crafted this album to bridge personal emotion, Korean cultural memory and the group\u2019s own evolution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Aliens is one of the album\u2019s emotional anchors. On the surface, it\u2019s a song about feeling foreign to a place, to a moment, even to yourself. But the more you sit with it, the more it feels like a metaphor for the years BTS spent apart, navigating adulthood, military service and the pressure of returning to a world that had changed with them.<\/span><\/p>\n It also references the political atmosphere for people of color in the United States, as BTS were victims of racism when they toured in the United States. One example was an incident with<\/span> Jimmy Fallon <\/span><\/a>in which an interviewer asked him, \u201cWhich one of them is from North Korea?\u201d This is not the first time they have experienced racism, which is why the song \u201cAliens\u201d is perfect to describe their experience as Koreans in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While listening to the album, it seemed as if a lot of the lyrics were in English, which is ironic for its cultural significance. In BTS\u2019s Netflix documentary, <\/span>BTS: The Return<\/span><\/a>, RM and the other members said they had wanted \u201cto add more Korean.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n A later shot in the film is of RM feeling concerned that the lyrics he wrote sound unnatural because English isn\u2019t his dominant language.
