On a gloomy spring afternoon, the 34-year-old meets me at a cozy Notting Hill pub across the street from the flat where she lived for most of her 20s. Her manager booked a table under a pseudonym, but at 2:30 p.m., the establishment is empty except for a few old men nursing Guinnesses. \u201cThat was completely unnecessary,\u201d Waterhouse says as she greets me, looking effortless yet elevated in a Vivienne Westwood duster jacket. \u201cBut maybe it gave me an air of mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWaterhouse is the opposite of aloof. She beat me to the pub, and by the time I arrived, was already ordering a Coke and a basket of fries to share, which we take to a tucked-away corner. There\u2019s a straw wrapper on the table, but she brushes it off, unbothered, and curls up in an armchair like a cat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  size-large alignnone \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure  lrv-u-font-family-secondary u-color-medium-grey lrv-u-border-b-1 u-border-color-light-grey-tint-two u-margin-b-150 lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:792px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-padding-t-1 lrv-u-padding-b-1\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"u-color-medium-grey u-font-family-neue-xxs\">Zoe McConnell for Variety<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe\u2019s had quite the week already, starting with the Met Gala, where she turned heads in a plunging pink Michael Kors gown inspired by Greek statues carved out of rose marble. It\u2019s fitting that Waterhouse would be dressed like a goddess; up close, her skin looks airbrushed, save for a few freckles on her nose, and her honey-blonde hair \u2014 cut into a shag that countless women, myself included, have shown their hairdressers as inspiration \u2014 is impossibly shiny. \u201cI haven\u2019t had that many big nights \u2014 maybe two \u2014 since I\u2019ve had my daughter,\u201d she says. Waterhouse shares a 2-year-old with her partner, actor <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/robert-pattinson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_robert-pattinson\" data-tag=\"robert-pattinson\">Robert Pattinson<\/a>, who she met at a star-studded L.A. game night in 2018. \u201cAnd, yeah, we stayed out till 7 a.m.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHighlights of the Met Gala included catching up with \u201cHeated Rivalry\u201d breakout Connor Storrie, who recently comforted her on a turbulent plane ride \u2014 \u201cI was sort of clutching onto him the whole time,\u201d she says \u2014 and seeing Stevie Nicks perform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI said hi to Stevie Nicks! That\u2019s obviously a huge moment,\u201d exclaims Waterhouse, who starred in the 2023 Amazon series \u201cDaisy Jones &amp; the Six,\u201d which was loosely based on Fleetwood Mac\u2019s recording of \u201cRumours.\u201d She was also pranked by \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d star Marcello Hernandez when he introduced Bad Bunny \u2014 who was made up like an old man for the occasion \u2014 to her as his uncle. \u201cHe totally got me,\u201d she laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThough Waterhouse\u2019s life now seems the picture of glamour \u2014 moving from place to place with her little family based on film shoots and tour dates \u2014 back in the part of town where she spent her early adulthood, it feels like nothing has changed. \u201cWhenever I come here, it brings me right back to who I was,\u201d she says wistfully. \u201cGrowing up, Notting Hill was always this vision I had in my head of where I was going to become a woman. And that very much was the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"separator larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-tb-00 lrv-u-border-b-1 lrv-u-border-color-grey-light  \"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWaterhouse was scouted as a model in high school, plucked from the affluent West London suburb of Chiswick, where she grew up with her plastic surgeon father, nurse mother and three siblings. Still, diving headfirst into the city and a competitive industry was a shock. (She has since modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, appeared on five Vogue covers and walked the runway for Burberry and Balenciaga.) \u201cThat changed my life a lot, and was quite surprising,\u201d she says, grabbing a handful of fries. \u201cMore than the work itself, it was a cultural exploration of London and the nightlife and the people, and suddenly being able to look around and put these pieces together of what it was like to be an artist. It completely blew my world open.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnyone who was on Tumblr in the 2010s likely first stumbled across Waterhouse as one of the London \u201cit\u201d girls alongside Alexa Chung and Georgia May Jagger, posing in miniskirts at all the best parties next to their rock-star boyfriends (hers was indie rock artist Miles Kane). But she felt destined for more. Acting came first, with Waterhouse scoring small roles in the 2014 rom-com \u201cLove, Rosie,\u201d 2015\u2019s \u201cInsurgent\u201d and 2016\u2019s \u201cPride and Prejudice and Zombies.\u201d And behind the scenes, she was also starting to write music of her own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Notting Hill apartment was \u201cwhere I had my mattress on the floor and my first piano and guitar, and where I first had that solitude to start writing,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s where I would take the wild from outside and hibernate within myself. So many stories developed here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe released her first single in 2016 \u2014 the lo-fi heartbreak ballad \u201cBrutally\u201d \u2014 followed by three more in the next three years, refining her jangly DIY indie-pop sound more with each song. But it wasn\u2019t until she played a musician in \u201cDaisy Jones\u201d \u2014 the keyboardist Karen Sirko, inspired by Christine McVie \u2014 that Waterhouse decided to give music a real shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI was suddenly learning piano in a very serious way for hours and hours a day. And then the pandemic happened, and I was back in London, stuck here for a year with all those new tools in front of me,\u201d she says. \u201cI had that moment of realizing, I really want to finally put together my first piece of work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWaterhouse has now released two acclaimed albums \u2014 2022\u2019s \u201cI Can\u2019t Let Go\u201d and 2024\u2019s \u201cMemoir of a Sparklemuffin,\u201d both via indie label Sub Pop Records \u2014 graduating from touring with Father John Misty to commanding festival stages and opening for Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cEras Tour\u201d in London.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOf Swift, Waterhouse says, \u201cThe coolest thing about her is she gives other artists these insane opportunities that really change people\u2019s lives. Knowing her as a friend, she\u2019s actually been through so much. And I think the thing I always see in her is how she pulls herself through every time, and how everything that\u2019s ever happened to her becomes another piece of art that becomes part of the legacy. That\u2019s so inspiring \u2014 that\u2019s the artist that you want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a landscape that can seem oversaturated with cookie-cutter pop stars, Waterhouse delivers something different: a swaggering rock \u2019n\u2019 roll edge that recalls \u201970s icons like her new friend Nicks. But as Waterhouse\u2019s star was rising, she was also going through something even more life-changing: motherhood. In early 2024, she gave birth to a daughter. Just over a month later, she played Coachella for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was like a fugue. It was a dream. When I had her, I had so many incredible things going on,\u201d she says. \u201cMaybe if I have another one, it will be a more peaceful moment. But I just knew that this time it was going to be a whirlwind. And I think as a result, everything has been so real that it hurts. It\u2019s been amusing and so tender and fragile and hilarious and all the things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBalancing family life with her burgeoning career is one of the main topics of \u201cLoveland,\u201d Waterhouse\u2019s third album, which comes out on July 10. It\u2019s her first release after signing with Island Records, the label that\u2019s home to reigning pop girlies like Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Olivia Dean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen her contract with Sub Pop ended, Waterhouse says there was \u201ca fascination for me of, what\u2019s it like to be signed to a major label? I wanted to go on that ride and see for myself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo far, so good. Waterhouse\u2019s collaborators on \u201cLoveland\u201d include \u201cEspresso\u201d hitmaker Amy Allen, Taylor Swift go-to Aaron Dessner and Lorde producer Joel Little, in addition to the musical partners who have been there from the start, Natalie Findlay and Jules Apollinaire. \u201cFor the first time, I had the option to work with some of the biggest people in the industry, and it\u2019s kind of crazy,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m like,<em> really?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe 14-track \u201cLoveland\u201d \u2014 for which Waterhouse cites the Stone Roses, PJ Harvey and the Replacements as sonic inspiration \u2014 thematically swings between nostalgia for the wild days and nights of her youth and longing to be settled with her family. \u201cThere\u2019s this kind of recklessness and abandon, which is always the feeling that I want to chase,\u201d she admits. \u201cAnd then there\u2019s also this part of me that\u2019s very much missing and yearning for the intimate, cozy moments in my life. They\u2019re all very equally true to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThere\u2019s even a track named for Notting Hill \u2014 a groovy piano-led love letter to \u201crunning around with a hangover in my early 20s\u201d and wondering when you\u2019ll meet your own Hugh Grant, just like in the Richard Curtis classic. Turns out, her apartment across the street is also \u201creally where I fell in love with Rob,\u201d she says, blushing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe music that I was making when I first started was very much in reaction to toxic relationships and heartbreak and that painful rollercoaster of girlhood,\u201d Waterhouse adds. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been interesting this time around to have my heart cracked open in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s not hard to tell that on \u201cLoveland,\u201d Pattinson is Waterhouse\u2019s muse. The album\u2019s opening song and lead single, \u201cBack in Love,\u201d is a joyous trumpet-backed ode to getting her own spark back postpartum, as well as in their relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI felt like my identity had been cut open in becoming a mother and also having a lot of expectations on myself. Internally, there\u2019s been quite a lot of turmoil and just wondering if I\u2019m doing the right thing. And especially, oh my God, the hormones right after you have a baby are so intense,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s like [I got] belief back in myself, and then also being \u2026 I don\u2019t want to say back in love with my partner, because it sounds like I was out of it, which I was never. But it\u2019s also a new relationship. Waterhouse and Pattinson have chosen not to share their daughter\u2019s name or face publicly but are hounded by paparazzi trying to capture them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think it really is possible to keep as much of your life private as possible. You can have both,\u201d she says. \u201cBut you don\u2019t want someone to recognize your kid in the street; it\u2019s a safety thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe also doesn\u2019t want her daughter to feel the pressure of growing up in the spotlight. \u201cWhat if she wants to be a really cool scientist?\u201d she asks. \u201cTwenty years from now we\u2019ll see if she wants to do anything in the public eye.\u201d However, Waterhouse adds that \u201c[my daughter] is, unfortunately, quite theatrical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s his name on my charm \/ That\u2019s my kid in his arms,\u201d Waterhouse sings on the album\u2019s second single, \u201cTiny Raisin,\u201d a sassy upbeat doo-wop fueled by \u201cpostpartum angst, but with lots of love in there too,\u201d she says. Though the title came from a conversation with co-writer Steph Jones about \u201chow men are really incapable of making dinner reservations\u201d (\u201cI can lie in the bathtub and be raisined like, \u2018Have you booked anywhere yet?&#8217;\u201d she laughs), its catchy chorus boasts: \u201cThat\u2019s my man \/ Hot damn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe country-tinged \u201cMorals\u201d was also spurred by a chat with a collaborator \u2014 this time with Allen, who asked Waterhouse for her advice dealing with jealousy when dating an actor. \u201cOh my God, if I was worrying about that then I\u2019d just be on the floor at this point. I wouldn\u2019t be able to get out of bed!\u201d she exclaims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a full-circle twist, \u201cMorals\u201d features drums from none other than Mick Fleetwood, whom Waterhouse met when he reached out for her help writing a song for an upcoming project. Surprisingly, she says \u201cDaisy Jones &amp; the Six\u201d never came up. The song they wrote together is \u201cabout his relationship with\u2026 someone,\u201d Waterhouse teases. She then used their collaboration \u201cas leverage and asked him to drum on [\u2018Morals\u2019] and he was like, \u2019Sure, that\u2019s easy for me. I can whip it out in 15 minutes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe<strong> <\/strong>album<strong> <\/strong>puts Waterhouse\u2019s expansive range on full display, from the sassy bravado of \u201cAny Man\u201d (\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Am I allowed to say this now that I\u2019m a mum?&#8217;\u201d she teases of its sexy lyrics) to the pensive and stripped-back \u201cSeasons,\u201d which she recorded at Dessner\u2019s iconic Long Pond Studios. \u201cHe\u2019s very egoless \u2014 I think that\u2019s why so many women love working with him,\u201d she says of the producer. \u201cHe has such a light touch with how he guides you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut the heart of \u201cLoveland\u201d for Waterhouse is its closing track, \u201cWeirdo,\u201d a lilting love song about missing Pattinson when they\u2019re apart. \u201cYou\u2019re on set \/ Is that ancient Rome?\u201d Waterhouse sings in the opening line, then croons in the chorus: \u201cDreams come true \/ But they take me far away from you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s acknowledging that these big life moments are happening, and it\u2019s this whirlwind that we\u2019re on. But at the same time being like, \u2018I haven\u2019t brushed my teeth next to you for a long time,&#8217;\u201d she says. \u201cIt isn\u2019t about going, \u2018This is horrible and the worst thing ever.\u2019 It\u2019s actually just being quite settled, and the strength of knowing that these things won\u2019t be happening to us forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLuckily, London is home base for the rest of the year as Pattinson finishes shooting \u201cThe Batman Part II\u201d and Waterhouse starts rehearsals for her North American tour, which kicks off in July in Arizona and hits venues including New York\u2019s Radio City Music Hall and L.A.\u2019s Hollywood Forever Cemetery. She\u2019s putting the show together now, drawing from films like the 1988 fantasy adventure \u201cThe Adventures of Baron Munchausen\u201d and queer classic \u201cPink Narcissus\u201d for inspiration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI want to make \u2018Loveland\u2019 this night at the opera. I\u2019m playing theaters, and it will have kind of a baroque feeling,\u201d she says, adding that she\u2019s toying with the idea of having big set pieces on stage reminiscent of \u201950s theme park rides.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe world of \u201cLoveland\u201d will also be interactive through a board game included on the inside of every <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/shop.sukiwaterhousemusic.com\/products\/loveland-standard-lp\" target=\"_blank\">vinyl copy of the album<\/a>, meant to be played in tandem with the music. \u201cIt\u2019s quite a revealing game,\u201d she says (indeed, the player who has most recently gone through a breakup gets to roll the dice first). \u201cIt has fun elements and then also questions like, \u2018When was the last time you failed?\u2019 It\u2019s honest and fragile and also quite funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWaterhouse is reveling in the creative freedom that has come with this chapter of her career \u2014 in fact, \u201cit\u2019s the first time that I\u2019m actually really the boss,\u201d she says. Starting out as a model, she had a lot of unlearning to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt takes a long time to get to a place where you have a bit more of a voice \u2014 especially in that industry,\u201d she says, adding: \u201cBeing a young woman is fucking brutal. And then when you get older, you realize that no one really has any idea what they\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe credits the women around her \u2014 including her \u201cDaisy Jones\u201d co-stars Riley Keough and Camila Morrone \u2014 with encouraging her to speak her mind both on set and in the studio. \u201cIn contrast to my own Britishness, [they] have taught me that it\u2019s kind of great to be a little bit difficult,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s actually just because you fucking care. Whenever anyone tells me that somebody\u2019s difficult, I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, I like them. Obviously.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMusic has certainly become Waterhouse\u2019s dominant pursuit, but would she ever return to acting? \u201cThe desire is still there completely,\u201d she says without hesitation. \u201cIt\u2019s really a thing of managing when. Because tours get booked up, and then trying to manage having a family at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe feels similarly about tying the knot with Pattinson. Though the couple never officially announced their engagement, Waterhouse was spotted with a toi-et-moi ring on her left hand shortly after revealing she was pregnant. The same ring is still sparkling there today, among many others stacked on nearly each finger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cNothing scarier than the actual planning part, right?\u201d she says, grinning. \u201cI\u2019m gonna go to Taylor\u2019s wedding, and maybe I\u2019ll get some inspiration. Facing the World, which helps children with facial disfigurements gain access to reconstructive surgery, was co-founded in 2002 by her father, plastic surgeon Norman Waterhouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen the charity started, Facing the World would fly children to London from all over the world to get life-changing surgeries. \u201cWe had the kids and families stay with us at our house for sometimes seven or eight months at a time,\u201d Waterhouse says. \u201cIt\u2019s not just one surgery in a lot of these cases; it can be many.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow, Facing the World has evolved to focus mainly on Vietnam, where facial birth defects are up to 10 times higher than in neighboring countries due to the ongoing effects of Agent Orange.
