Some posted that they were not aware the event was part of the initiative planned by the Trump administration celebrating the nation\u2019s milestone anniversary. So the Grammy-winning hip-hop artist Young MC will not be busting a move during the festivities after all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY3jC6gDZK8\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">He wrote on social media<\/a> that he hopes to perform in Washington \u201cin the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cI have informed my agents that I will not be performing at the Freedom 250 event,\u201d Young MC, whose real name is Marvin Young, wrote in all capital letters. \u201cThe artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Young MC joined Morris Day, frontman of the Prince-affiliated funk-rock band the Time, who wrote that he and the group would not be participating with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY205fkPXX5\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=1eb7f2a1-0cd4-43bc-a263-a23952d30e2d\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a short, direct social media post<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s a No for Me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The fallout continued on Thursday when the funk-soul group the Commodores and the country singer Martina McBride said they would also not participate in the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cOur music has always been our voice and we choose not to publicly affiliate with any single political party,\u201d the Commodores said in a statement on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">McBride <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY5s4J5qPRj\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on social media<\/a> that she thought the event would be a nonpartisan way to celebrate all 50 states and called the opportunity \u201cmisleading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cIt greatly upsets me that any fan who has been moved by my music may now feel like I\u2019m abandoning the meaning behind those songs,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI assure you, that is not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The rock musician Bret Michaels also said that he was dropping out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cUnfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be part of,\u201d the Poison frontman wrote on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DY6M0UYlRXh\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cConcerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In a statement, Rachel Reisner, a spokeswoman for Freedom 250, called the group nonpartisan and said, \u201cFreedom 250 is focused on our signature celebrations and events that honor our history and engage all Americans \u2014 welcoming all who share our goal of commemorating this milestone in a way that uplifts and unites America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The organizers of the series also said they were continuing to work with the artists and their managers to see if they could be persuaded to return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Also on Thursday, the Milli Vanilli singer Jodie Rocco said the group had not been asked to perform, despite being announced in the lineup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">\u201cMy sister and I were shocked to see our name, \u2018Milli Vanilli,\u2019 as one of the performers,\u201d Rocco wrote in an email to The Associated Press. The lead vocalist, Freedom Williams, initially said he would not attend after learning the event was orchestrated by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">But in a lengthy video post discussing a wide range of disparate topics, he appeared intent on performing to spite those who reacted angrily to the initial announcement of the group\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">The other announced performers were the hip-hop artists Vanilla Ice (who appeared at Donald Trump\u2019s New Year\u2019s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago) and Flo Rida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Accepting or declining an invitation for a Trump-associated event is largely viewed as an endorsement or rejection, a story line that has played out countless times during his two terms in office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">In the aftermath of winning championships, sports teams now often debate the customary offer of attending a White House celebration. Multiple high-profile artists have publicly demanded that the Trump campaign stop using their music at rallies or in social media posts. Last year, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/02\/arts\/kennedy-center-performance-cancellations.html\" title=\"\">a number of artists canceled planned shows<\/a> at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts after Trump\u2019s sweeping changes to the institution.
