There is a different name<\/a> atop the Kansas City Royals\u2019 batting order on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Royals placed rookie catcher Carter Jensen in the leadoff spot ahead of their matchup against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Jensen hit leadoff twice last season. And, he had a memorable game against the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> last September. He hit three doubles after being recognized as the 2025 George Brett Hitter of the Year.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI like the idea of hitting leadoff,\u201d Jensen said. \u201cI think I can fill the role great. I think it\u2019s just putting my approach to my plan and just going out there and competing.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Jensen will look to provide an offensive spark. The Royals are searching for answers after being outscored 31-2 in their last three games.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The offensive struggles<\/a> prompted Royals manager Matt Quatraro to make a significant lineup change. He moved third baseman Maikel Garcia to the third spot in the order.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This left a vacancy at the top. On Friday, Lane Thomas hit leadoff against left-hander MacKenzie Gore and went 0 for 4 in the game.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Jensen is set for his chance. He plans to keep a similar approach but noted one key change. The first-year backstop hopes to utilize better plate discipline.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI think it just really makes me focus a little bit more,\u201d Jensen said. \u201cTake good at-bats and see pitches. That being said, like, still the same stuff. I don\u2019t want to miss my pitch, ever, whether it’s the first pitch or ninth pitch in the at-bat. It\u2019s just putting together good at-bats and getting on base. That\u2019s a priority.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This season, Jensen is hitting .222 with six homers and 23 RBIs. He owns a .689 OPS (on-base plus slugging) in 52 games.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n After a hot start, Jensen is navigating the choppy waters of the majors. He endured a few struggles but has leaned on teammates for support.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Garcia was one of those players. The duo spoke on a recent road trip about hitting and ways to improve each day.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI just said, you don\u2019t have to cover all the plate,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cYou have to pick your spot at the plate. And like, early in the (strike) zone, you have to pick if you want to swing middle in and (if so) you pick that zone. If he is away, you leave it. And with two strikes, just cover all the plate because you know, we are trying to put the ball in play.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Jensen took the advice to heart. He plans to utilize the teachings at the plate moving forward. And if it all works out, Jensen is hopeful to stick in the leadoff spot.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cI think, obviously, every day is a new opportunity,\u201d Jensen said. \u201cI think this is a new opportunity for me. You know, just trying to fill the role as best I can.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Quatraro is confident Jensen will thrive. However, he doesn\u2019t want him to get too far out of his game. The goal is to play to his strengths and help the club win a game.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201cWe want him to have good at-bats,\u201d Quatraro said. \u201cYou know, that\u2019s been one of his strengths coming up through the minor leagues and in the early part of his career here. (We want him to) see pitches, swing at strikes and make the pitcher work. Get on base in front of those guys. He\u2019s not a base clogger. And, you know, these guys are going to be able to run.
