A blind date \u2014 but make it comedy.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the fun of Don\u2019t Tell Comedy, a traveling comedy club that hosts a secret line up of comedians at undisclosed locations across the United States, including the Central Coast.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Cole Garrett is the West Coast regional manager at Don\u2019t Tell Comedy<\/a>. He\u2019s been with the company for eight of its nine years and said that San Luis Obispo County is one of his favorite crowds to work with.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime you go to a beach town, I feel like people are just excited and happy about their lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The idea behind the company is to provide access to comedy deserts with an affordable ticket price, Garrett said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we started, the show was kind of like the idea of bringing you a comedy club level show with some of the best talent around the country without comedy club level prices,\u201d he said. \u201c So a lot of our shows were built off of a BYOB model, or like a great comedy show meets like a backyard barbecue.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

How it works is guests buy a ticket online for about $30, the city of the venue being the only disclosed information \u2014 the venue and lineup remain a surprise until the day of.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Tell Comedy started in 2017 with the hope of providing access to quality comedy without the high sticker price and now hosts all over the country, including San Luis Obispo County. Libbey Hanson <\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n

\u201cI think the secret location was just always something that just added an extra element of surprise and fun,\u201d Garrett said. \u201cI think it was just a new concept that really stuck with people, and people really like the idea that they\u2019re just going to put their trust in us for the night, and we\u2019ll sort of take the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Venues can range from local backyards, to breweries, or even yoga studios, and serves as a win-win for businesses wanting exposure.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really fun experience for people to be able to just buy a ticket to something and not have to think too hard about it,\u201d he said. \u201cJust go, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re going enjoy a fun night out,\u2019 and \u2018Oh, wow, it\u2019s at the yoga studio,\u2019 or \u2018It\u2019s at this Pilates studio that I go to,\u2019 or \u2018Oh my god, it\u2019s in my neighbor\u2019s backyard.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For example, the show on May 23 was at Oak and Otter Brewing Co.<\/a> located at 181 Tank Farm Road in San Luis Obispo.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Being a small space, the seating was intimate, but that also seemed to be the purpose.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Attendees filed in, grabbed a drink and hot dog, mingled among each other, then enjoyed many good laughs throughout the night\u2019s lineup.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Tell Comedy\u2019s ambiguity also applies to its lineups. Comedians can be local or have traveled from around the country for the shows.<\/p>\n

At Saturday\u2019s show, the lineup consisted of five comedians: Jack Scotti<\/a>, Sam Goldstein<\/a>, SLO local Vic Pulido, Drew Landry<\/a> and headliner Kyle Rehl<\/a>, who\u2019s also been featured on Peacock.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Other previous notable performers with Don\u2019t Tell Comedy include Taylor Tomlinson<\/a>, Ali Wong<\/a>, Nikki Glaser<\/a> and Michael Che<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Closer to home, upcoming shows are scheduled in SLO, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach and Orcutt, including an \u201cAll Stars\u201d show in Paso Robles on June 5, which will headline a comedian featured on Don\u2019t Tell Comedy\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>, Garrett said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s been really cool to be able to offer a slightly elevated experience where it\u2019s not just a showcase, it\u2019s actually some of our favorite comics, and some of the biggest up-and-coming comics in the country right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
