Try these 9 South Shore events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>In recognition of Pride Month, a historic Quincy church will raise the Progress Pride Flag on Sunday, May 31, at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>United First Parish Church in Quincy Center, the \u201cChurch of the Presidents,\u201d will host the city&#8217;s fifth annual flag raising, and Quincy\u2019s LGBTQ+ community will present the second annual \u201cFlag Raisers\u201d Awards. The awards recognize those who have supported the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s honorees include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gayle Carvalho, Quincy Teachers Association<\/li>\n<li>Beth Ann Strollo, executive director, Quincy Community Action Programs<\/li>\n<li>Cameron Porter, Major Theatre Equipment Corp.<\/li>\n<li>David Bousquin, United First Parish Church<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The event will be hosted by LGBTQ+ Commission Chair Jim Petosa, Commissioner Nina Liang, and Commissioner John McDonald.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cThe flying of the Progress Pride Flag on the historic fa\u00e7ade of the church that houses the crypts of two American Presidents and their First Ladies is a powerful symbol of visibility, freedom, and the continuing fight for civil and human rights,\u201d said the commissioners in a joint statement. \u201cNow more than ever, it is important that communities publicly stand together against hate, division, and discrimination while affirming the dignity and humanity of every person.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>The outdoor ceremony will include live music by members of The Quincy Choral Society and an interfaith invocation and blessing led by the Rev. Rebecca Froom and members of the Quincy Interfaith Network.<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Speakers will include Petosa; Liang; McDonald; and Ward 2 City Councilor Richard Ash, president of Quincy Pride.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">History of the Progress Pride Flag<\/h2>\n<p>The Progress Pride Flag was first introduced in 2018 by artist Daniel Quasar, expanding upon the traditional Pride Flag by incorporating black and brown stripes representing LGBTQ+ communities of color, along with the pink, blue and white stripes of the Transgender Pride Flag. This year\u2019s festival promises an lineup of community resources and interactive experiences that highlight inclusion, acceptance and pride. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their most colorful attire.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>When:<\/strong> Saturday, June 6; 3-9 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where: <\/strong>Hull Yacht Club, 5 Fitzpatrick Way, Hull<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hull&#8217;s free Pride celebration kicks off with a performance from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mad_jupiter_music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mad Jupiter<\/a>, a trans\/nonbinary Boston-based artist whose music fuses neo-soul and funk with rock grooves, followed by a performance from drag queen <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/missysteak.squarespace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Missy Steak<\/a>. The day then moves into a DJ dance party with Hull Pride\u2019s in-house DJs, Jason and Suzy. The event will also feature food trucks and a return from the team at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.suchfunphotobooth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Such Fun Photo Booth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>When:<\/strong> Sunday, June 7; 1-4 p.m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where:<\/strong> King Oak Hill Park, Emery Lane, Weymouth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now in its sixth year, Pride in the Park is a free, family-friendly LGBTQIA+ event with live performances, DJ Brendan Howard, dancing, games, Just The Dip Food Truck, Ellie\u2019s Treats and more. Nelson Park has direct beach access and a splash pad and playground for the kids. There&#8217;s also a large, grassy lawn area if you want to bring a chair to watch the entertainment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">What is Pride Month?<\/h2>\n<p>Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York and celebrates the LGBTQ community and the fight for equal rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2019\/06\/04\/stonewall-forever-digital-monument-debuts-50-years-after-riots\/1253801001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonewall Uprising<\/a>\u00a0began on June 28, 1969<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a prominent gay bar in Manhattan\u2019s Greenwich Village. The protests that followed are credited with a shift in LGBTQ+ activism in the U.S.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>The following year saw some of the first Pride parades in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. In addition to celebrating LGBTQ love and joy, it\u2019s also a time to highlight important policy and resource issues the community faces.
