Jimmy Kimmel has some thoughts on the purported death of late-night television.<\/p>\n
The \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d host opened up in a new interview with Vulture <\/a>about the future of the genre following the cancellation of Stephen Colbert\u2019s \u201cLate Show\u201d on CBS and his own run-ins with Trump, including his suspension following comments made about the death of Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI feel a little bit defeated about it,\u201d Kimmel told Vulture after Colbert\u2019s final episode aired on May 21. \u201cIn a lot of ways, I feel like I\u2019m looking at my own future.\u201d<\/p>\n CBS canceled \u201cThe Late Show\u201d in July 2025 \u2014 a year before Colbert\u2019s three-year deal was set to end \u2014 citing \u201cpurely financial reasons\u201d despite much speculation that Colbert\u2019s anti-Trump views had something to do with it, especially with the Paramount-Skydance merger in the background. Though it was reported that Colbert\u2019s show was losing $40 million a year, Kimmel told Vulture he finds that hard to believe, pointing to a 2023 New York Times article that claims Colbert was offered a five-year contract but decided to go with three.<\/p>\n \u201cAm I to believe that over the course of those two years, they suddenly started losing $40 million a year?\u201d he said. \u201cThese are just made-up numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n Kimmel said that ABC has told him \u201cquite specifically\u201d that his show is still profitable.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are far more people watching late-night TV than there ever were, if you look at the number of views me and my colleagues get online every day and add in our linear-television ratings,\u201d Kimmel asserted, adding: \u201cWe\u2019re not just dying of natural causes. We\u2019re being poisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n However, Kimmel\u2019s contract was extended in December by just one year instead of the standard three. \u201cEverything is so tumultuous,\u201d Kimmel told Vulture. \u201cThat seemed to make sense. It\u2019s definitely not how it\u2019s gone in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n Asked if he has thought about retirement, Kimmel said he\u2019s still unsure when his time will come. \u201cIt\u2019s important to me to be responsible,\u201d he said. \u201cI know I could go out in a blaze of glory and get a lot of applause for it, but it would be a very selfish thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n That is, if he isn\u2019t ousted first. Trump has repeatedly called for Kimmel to be fired, most recently when he made a joke about Melania Trump having a \u201cglow like an expectant widow.\u201d In that case and that of Kirk, Kimmel said he \u201chad the truth on my side as a defense.
