M.I.A. is suing Kid Cudi for $2.8 million after the British rapper was kicked off his Rebel Ragers Tour for \u201cmaking offensive remarks\u201d during her opening act.<\/p>\n
\u201cKid Cudi\u2019s attempts to silence freedom of artistic expression and speech on his \u2018Rebel Rager\u2019s Tour\u2019 cannot go unchallenged,\u201d read a statement from M.I.A.\u2019s team. \u201cKid Cudi claimed shock over her comments he now labels as \u2018offensive\u2019 and his abrupt and unjustified termination of her performance agreement is a desperate attempt to sell tickets for his tour that was drastically underselling. As a result, his false allegations have fueled a misguided, hive-minded pile-on based on a deliberate misrepresentation of her words.\u201d<\/p>\n
More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Rep\u2019s for Kid Cudi did not immediately respond to Variety<\/em>\u2018s request for comment.<\/p>\n The figure of $2.8 million comes from a \u201cguarantee\u201d between the Rebel Rangers Tour promoter, Live Nation, and M.I.A. and her company, Neet Touring LLP. Lawyers for M.I.A. claim Live Nation agreed to pay her that amount \u201cregardless of what she said on stage.\u201d The lawsuit also states Cudi \u201cdirected Live Nation to fire M.I.A.,\u201d and \u201cportrayed himself as an aggrieved headliner forced to protect his fans\u201d after insisting that she, \u201c\u2019understood\u2019 that she could not say anything \u2018offensive\u2019 on the tour.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHere is the truth. M.I.A. was terminated to generate publicity for the Tour, which has struggled with ticket sales,\u201d reads the lawsuit obtained by Variety<\/em>. \u201cShe was contractually allowed to say whatever she wanted on stage. M.I.A. now holds Kid Cudi accountable for his bad faith destruction of her contractual rights, business opportunities, and reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n Cudi booted M.I.A. off the tour<\/a> shortly after a viral rant she made on May 2 during the Dallas date at the Dos Equis Pavilion. In the monologue, which was booed by concert goers, she said things like, \u201cI\u2019ve been canceled for many reasons. I never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.\u201d She also said, \u201cI can\u2019t do \u2018Illegal,\u2019 though some of you could be in the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n On May 4, Cudi announced on Instagram that M.I.A. was no longer on the Rebel Ragers Tour. He wrote, \u201cTOUR UPDATE: M.I.A is no longer on this tour. I told my management to send a notice to her team before we started tour that I didn\u2019t want anything offensive at my shows, cuz I already knew what time it was, and I was assured things were understood. After the last couple shows, I\u2019ve been flooded with messages from fans that were upset by her rants. This, to me, is very disappointing, and I wont have someone on my tour making offensive remarks that upsets my fanbase. Thank you for understanding. THEN PLAYED A SONG THAT HAD LYRICS SAYING \u201cFU&% THE LAW\u201d, WHICH I STILL BELIEVE, IF THE LAW IS UNJUST F@%& IT. DO NOT GASLIGHT MY WORDS. THAT IS THE WORK OF SATAN. I WROTE BORDERS AND ILLYGAL AND PAPER PLANES BEFORE YOU THOUGHT IMMIGRANT RIGHTS WERE COOL. I\u2019VE HAD THSES BATTLES BY MYSELF WITHOUT THE HELP OF MILLIONS OF FANS BACKING ME . I DON\u2019T NEED THIS VIRTUE SIGNAL ERA TO ALL OF A SUDDEN ERASE AN ENTIRE LIFE I\u2019VE LED. JESUS WAS AN IMMIGRANT AND A REBEL.
