By comparison, 98.4 percent of matches at the 2018 World Cup started before midnight, and 82.5 percent at the following edition in Qatar.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Television reach at the 2022 FIFA World Cup\" aria-label=\"Bar Chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-keQlG\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/keQlG\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width:0;min-width:100% !important;border:none\" height=\"762\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Karan Taurani, executive vice president at investment firm Elara Capital, sees TV as a \u201cstruggling\u201d medium in India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have these kinds of sporting events, effectively it is mostly digital that is monetising and raising big money,\u201d Taurani told Al Jazeera. \u201cThat is a big reason why no one\u2019s showing interest in the FIFA World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taurani explained that cricket leads the sports economy market in India.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly a small fraction of people who watch the Indian Premier League [IPL] will watch the FIFA World Cup,\u201d he said, adding that an even smaller fraction tune in past midnight to watch a match.<\/p>\n<p>Viacom18 paid \u2060\u2060about $60 million for rights to the 2022 \u2060\u2060World Cup, which was hosted in Qatar in time zones far more favourable for Indian audiences.
