May her memory be eternal.\u201d<\/p>\n Princess Sveva married Prince Nicholas Romanov on January 21, 1952, at the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Cannes. A few weeks earlier, on December 31, the couple had celebrated a civil wedding in Florence.<\/p>\n She was born in Tuscany into one of Italy\u2019s most distinguished aristocratic families. On her father\u2019s side, she belonged to the House of della Gherardesca, whose lineage dates back to the 10th century and is famously referenced in Dante\u2019s Divine Comedy. Through her maternal grandmother, she was also a descendant of U.S. President Martin Van Buren.<\/p>\n She spent her childhood on the family estate in the Tuscan countryside, where her father raised cattle and produced wine. She was educated privately at home.<\/p>\n At a party in Rome in 1950, she met her future husband, Prince Nicholas Romanovich Romanov.
