Charli XCX<\/a> has explained the thought process behind her much-discussed new album cover for her second full length of 2026, Music, Fashion, Film, <\/em>a photograph featuring John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Martin Scorsese shot by Aidan Zamiri.<\/p>\n

The pop star made the announcement on June 1st, sharing a head-turning photo on her social media where Cale, Jacobs, and Scorsese represent each of the mediums in the album title.<\/p>\n

After hosting a recent In Conversation event between Charli and her husband and 1975 musician George Daniel in London, music journalist Shaad D\u2019Souza shared a new interview he had with the hitmaker via social media<\/a> pertaining to the divisive creative direction.<\/p>\n

The Essex popstar explained to D\u2019Souza that the cover was shot in April in New York, which was \u201csuch a special day\u201d, shared with \u201call of my team, who are all of my best friends\u201d, including her The Moment <\/em>collaborator,<\/a> Zamiri.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Apple\u2019 singer gushed that the creative collaboration left her \u201cshook\u201d, adding, \u201cI never really have felt genuinely shook before, I think. And once we finished that shoot, me and Aiden were just\u2026 It was like this out-of-body experience, and I turned to him, and I was like, \u2018I think this is what shook means\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cJust to have these three legends in this room being willing to come together for this album cover [\u2026] for them to trust me, it was just really cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

She deemed the trio \u201cvery impactful people in my life,\u201d adding that it felt \u201cquite magical\u201d to see them in a room together.<\/p>\n

The performer added that the \u201cfun thing about the cover and the title is that everybody has their own opinions<\/a> on who their trifecta of those people are,\u201d and, as such, it\u2019s \u201cfun seeing everybody else\u2019s interpretations of that.\u201d <\/p>\n

Drilling into specifics, she revealed that she chose the Velvet Underground star because \u201cI\u2019m just so impressed by how prolific he is.\u201d She also highlighted his \u201cdesire to work with artists from a completely different generation, and be willing to play in their worlds like he did with me.\u201d Famously, the pair collaborated on a single<\/a> for Charli XCX\u2019s soundtrack of Emerald Fennell\u2019s Wuthering Heights.<\/em><\/p>\n

With Jacobs, she explained, \u201cHe was the first person who ever gave me a fashion campaign. He was the first person who opened me up to that world in a way,\u201d adding that he has \u201calways been able to communicate youth culture through his work.\u201d <\/p>\n

Finally, Charli chose Scorsese as \u201cI\u2019ve been lucky enough to be able to sit down and have a few conversations with him about film,\u201d though she added humourously, \u201che doesn\u2019t really need an explanation, he\u2019s fucking Martin Scorsese.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The 33-year-old also revealed that the album title came \u201creally, really early, right on top of making the first idea for the record.\u201d The title, to Charli, represents \u201csomething cheeky, in a way,\u201d as well as conjuring up ideas of \u201cambition and scale and glamour, but at the same time it\u2019s also very, very real and personal, and made by real people.\u201d <\/p>\n

When asked about the usual criticism to an artist encroaching in a different medium they aren\u2019t known for, Charli insisted that she would, \u201cnever call myself an expert on any topic,\u201d adding that she just has \u201ca hunger to learn\u201d.<\/p>\n

Music, Fashion, Film\u00a0<\/em>is set to be released on July 24th, 2026.<\/p>\n
