“Writing in the third person was the key here \u2014 it felt like I was summing up the life of someone close to me but separate,” Lily explains, continuing:<\/p>\n
\nIt tracks the period after the end of a relationship, when you\u2019re ready to love someone again but feeling residual pain from the time before. Every breakup has felt like it\u2019ll hurt forever but it\u2019s always led me to something different, often better, never nothing. “If I only have this one life it should take the shape I\u2019m in” \u2014 I was in a good place when I wrote Uh Huh and writing this line particularly proved that to me. I was shocked that I meant it, how much had changed in the space of a few months.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“You\u2019ll never want to doubt it but the last time you have it it won\u2019t kill you” \u2014 this pretty much sums it up, the fact that you\u2019ll remember the pain, you\u2019ll always want to believe that the love you have will last, and if it doesn\u2019t there\u2019ll be another.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This one changed a lot from writing to recording. I knew it\u00a0had to have\u00a0a solid groove\u00a0to it,\u00a0sound\u00a0strong and sure of itself, and it took a couple of different band configurations to get there (James on drums was a missing\u00a0ingredient.)\u00a0It felt from the start like it leaned more country than other songs I\u2019ve written, though, and that didn\u2019t change. Like I\u2019d absorbed some of the America I live in now. British country music\u2026<\/p>\n
