They\u2019ve won Grammys and released eight solo albums. They\u2019ve lost loved ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAnd a uterus!\u201d quips Natalie Hemby, sitting in the green room between rehearsals with her bandmates. Only a group like the Highwomen, filled with artists insistent on sharing women\u2019s stories in a genre where beer, truck, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/luke-bryan-fish-hunt-golf-drink-song-ai-accusations-1235570146\/\">fishing<\/a> songs by men rule country radio playlists, could kick things off with a joke about a hysterectomy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s the Thursday before the Highwomen are set to take the stage as part of Carlile\u2019s Echoes Through the Canyon run at the Gorge in Washington state, and the champagne (alongside pre-champagne IV hydration) is already flowing. This is the first time the band has reunited to perform since their last show at this same venue in 2023, which they just released as a digital-only live album. Their custom Nudie suits are pressed, their kids are in tow and, according to Shires, they\u2019ll be playing under a full moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cShires is going to be howling at it,\u201d Carlile says. \u201cI guarantee you that.\u201d Shires doesn\u2019t argue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThings have changed for the Highwomen, but they\u2019ve changed for the genre, too. In the years since the band came together to challenge country radio\u2019s persistent gender imbalance, there has been some significant headway. Ella Langely has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/ella-langley-choosin-texas-interview-1235536275\/\">been breaking numerous records<\/a> with \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas,\u201d and both Lainey Wilson and Megan Moroney have dominated award shows, album sales, and, at times, the airwaves. Collaboration, not competition \u2014 a core tenant of the Highwomen\u2019s philosophy \u2014 is rampant. Women are producing one another\u2019s records, writing together, and fighting to make space for many when the default is one, or even none.\u00a0 Even Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves have <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/kacey-musgraves-miranda-lambert-horses-and-divorces-live-1235558485\/\">buried the hatchet<\/a>. The Highwomen may not have persuaded radio programmers to add their songs into rotation, but their mission has permeated deeply.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDespite all that success, the outlook at country radio is still far too dismal. This week, there are only two songs by women in the Mediabase Top 20 for country airplay. Queer voices are rare, while trans artists and Black women are almost nonexistent. These days, though, the Highwomen are less concerned about radio and more optimistic about the power of community when it comes to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/country-music\/\" id=\"auto-tag_country-music\" data-tag=\"country-music\">country music<\/a>. And a new album is brewing. They\u2019re hashing out plans to write this summer, and lighting up the group text thread with ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe four of us together,\u201d Shires says, \u201cis the closest thing we have to a superpower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>The resounding response to your reunion seems to be, \u201c<em>Thank God, we need this right now<\/em>.\u201d What do you think it is about this moment that feels so right for a Highwomen return? It\u2019s been seven years since <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/the-highwomen-interview-brandi-carlile-maren-morris-860629\/\"><strong>we met on the tour bus<\/strong><\/a><strong> at the \u201cRedesigning Women\u201d video shoot.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Maren Morris:<\/strong> I know why I need it. I\u2019m coming to the end of a lot of big chapters and an album cycle, and a lot of tough things these last few years. I\u2019m right there with the fans, and the new ones that have discovered us recently. We met to be in a band \u2014 it was all new. It was like a love affair, but we didn\u2019t really know each other. We\u2019ve been through so much in the past seven years that, no strings attached, we\u2019ve been calling each other and going, \u201cHey, are you okay? Let\u2019s talk about what you\u2019ve gone through.\u201d We kind of got married, and then became partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Is it different coming to the stage knowing one another so well, and having been through so much personally?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Amanda Shires:<\/strong> More grey hairs and better boundaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile:<\/strong> I\u2019m still boundary-less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Shires:<\/strong> I feel like this go-around, we have less to prove and more to enjoy, not in relation to the world or anything, just as a group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris: <\/strong>The pressure\u2019s off. We can just enjoy each other and what we\u2019ve endured, and the solo endeavors we\u2019ve had. It was such a relief to be in a band and not have to hold that attention all on your own shoulders. I also think anytime we\u2019re in a crowd that\u2019s Brandi\u2019s, it\u2019s a crowd that she and the artists that she puts on the line have cultivated. So you just know you\u2019re in for a really beautiful, safe, spiritual weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Shires:<\/strong> She creates an environment where people are free to be themselves, which is not an easy thing to do because it takes a lot of trust to feel free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> You lose people along the way too, as you cultivate a fanbase and become more yourself as an artist. You lose some, but then gain lifers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile:<\/strong> That is something that [Maren] has experienced a lot for sure, all of us have at different times, and it\u2019s such a hard thing to contend with because nobody becomes an entertainer to alienate people. But at some point, you have got to stand for something, or you fall for anything. Standing up for ourselves and losing folks but finding those who need it is a powerful thing. I\u2019ve been watching Maren\u2019s moves and I\u2019m feeling really proud of her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> That means so much coming from you. All of you guys have been there for me. When we started this, it was a positive way of addressing the lack of stories being told in the country mainstream. Obviously, that\u2019s still a factor, but I think then we had something to prove. A manifesto, almost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile: <\/strong>At the time, it was remarkable that [Maren] was breaking through. But I was just incredulous. I couldn\u2019t believe that there were absolutely no women going to Number One on radio in country music. I remember Dave Cobb wanted [Hemby] to write us a hit song so bad. She sent in the demo for \u201cCrowded Table,\u201d and I thought, \u201cHoly hell, that\u2019s got to be it!\u201d And he\u2019s like, \u201cMaybe an up-tempo one.\u201d And then she drops \u201cRedesigning Women\u201d like it\u2019s nothing. But these two songs, or beginnings of songs, became the sound of our band because of the way she was singing in the demos, which is the way we all now sing in unison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>It\u2019s unique to have homed in on a \u201cband sound\u201d so early on, especially when you all have such identifiable and developed solo careers.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Carlile:<\/strong> We sound like us. I really noticed it mixing this live album. Like, \u201cWe have a real musical identity.\u201d We got together for a purpose, and it became so musical, and now it\u2019s personal. To have all three of those things line up right now, it feels really good. Because I don\u2019t know about you guys, but when I drop a Highwomen song into the set, the crowd goes nuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Shires:<\/strong> There\u2019s something bigger than all of us when we all do this thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Natalie Hemby:<\/strong> I do feel like there\u2019s a divine thread between all four of us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>You always spoke about the Highwomen being a movement as much as a band, too. Has that vision, and approach to inclusivity, morphed at all over the years?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Shires:<\/strong> It is still the same, with more room at the table and a better playlist. I think there\u2019s still work to do, that\u2019s what I think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile: <\/strong>I think everybody has a different reason for perpetuating the concept of the Highwomen now. One thing I like about a movement, and the fact that people are more powerful en masse, with their voices amplified whether they\u2019re in unison or not, is that feeling of getting the door open just enough to let other people in. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve always really loved to do with my career and my art, and it\u2019s much cooler and so much more fun to do with four people. We\u2019re as dedicated to platforming and amplifying women and marginalized people as we always were, and we do that by building community with each other and with other people. That\u2019s what our shows are going to be, and that\u2019s what our music\u2019s going to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> What we stand for, what we\u2019re about, is the people we bring. I think every one of our shows has been a collaborative effort with our friends joining as well. We\u2019ve said it\u2019s sort of like musical chairs, whether it\u2019s Brittney Spencer, Yola, Sheryl Crow, we\u2019ve had people come in and help lift up the songs and lift each other up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Your personal bandmates aside, do we have a place for men in the Highwomen?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Carlile:<\/strong> We need men to perpetuate the movement. I\u2019m not a man, but I can say I\u2019m raising daughters, and I don\u2019t want them to hear the misogynistic and homogenous messaging in some modern country music. I want them to hear the messaging that I grew up hearing in Nineties country music, you know what I mean? I don\u2019t have to be a dad to know that I want my daughters\u2019 anthems to empower them instead of shrink them into a pair of shorts in a passenger seat of someone\u2019s pickup truck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Country radio does sound a little different now than it did in 2019. Ella Langley, Megan Moroney, and Lainey Wilson have all had breakthroughs. \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas,\u201d of course, is huge. But it\u2019s still such a small percentage of what actually gets played.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Carlile:<\/strong> Those songs are so good. I can\u2019t them out of my head. You should be hearing them nonstop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hemby:<\/strong> In the Top 50, there\u2019s only ever five or six girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> And the girls have to be outstanding. We have to be unique. We have to look different. We have to be eight times better for half the pay and half the coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Shires: <\/strong>And the scrutiny is different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> The level of songwriting has to be the highest caliber. We have to do all that to get noticed by an audience or label, but the safest bet is always finding a dude that sounds like eight other dudes, and the girls are the risks they take. Ella, Lainey, Meg, they all sound completely different from each other. The girls always have. Carrie didn\u2019t sound like Miranda. Faith didn\u2019t sound like Martina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile:<\/strong> Tanya [Tucker] always says the exact same thing. Not to be Pollyanna about everything, but it\u2019s like when Maren was totally dominating in country music, and didn\u2019t have to join the band because you know there aren\u2019t that many spots and you\u2019ve had one, and you made it inside the door. It\u2019s very tempting not to hold the door open or not join up with a community or movement. I did a thing a couple of weeks ago at <em>Billboard<\/em> Women in Music and Lainey gave Ella an award, and they\u2019re real friends. It\u2019s really uplifting to see that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hemby:<\/strong> It\u2019s like Lainey said at that awards show: \u201cY\u2019all need to stop pitting women against each other.\u201d I really love to see it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile: <\/strong>And when women are like, \u201cHey, I won\u2019t be the only one, who else is on this bill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> I don\u2019t want to pull the ladder up behind me. I do wonder if the Highwomen could have been created in the year like 2026 where there are women dominating the airwaves, finally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Shires:<\/strong> I think we were part of a cultural thing at the time, with us having the lady balls to do stuff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Hemby:<\/strong> The <em>laybs<\/em>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>I think you can also draw a line from a song like \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d back to the Highwomen. Radio programmers may have not played your songs much, if at all, but you helped warm them up both to women\u2019s perspectives and to a more twangy, classically country sound. Brandi, I remember you were really set on trying to get the band on the airwaves.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Carlile: <\/strong>Maren said, \u201cThat\u2019s never going to happen,\u201d and I was like, \u201cIt will!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> The hopefulness [Brandi] had was because you grew up with a very different version of [country], and then when you come against the machine of it you realize, if you\u2019re let in, you probably should just shut your mouth because you\u2019re lucky to be there. But I just realized this is not the dream I had when I was singing into a shampoo bottle. I wasn\u2019t trying to rain on anyone\u2019s parade when I told Brandi, \u201cDo the radio tour interviews, but I don\u2019t think they have the bravery to go and give it a spin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile: <\/strong>They might not even have power to do it. They might be so corporately influenced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Shires:<\/strong> Since the record, you see more women in positions we didn\u2019t see before. There are more women engineers, more women producing. And more in radio. Maybe we keep pushing and whatever happens, happens. I\u2019m just trying to stay hopeful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile<\/strong>: I just don\u2019t need to get called \u201ccountry music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Morris:<\/strong> I\u2019m fine being called anything. I don\u2019t think I have the same sort of jadedness or bulldog headedness I had seven years ago. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019m worn down or wiser, maybe both. Motherhood has changed me. Even though I can still absolutely go there and be a bitch, I do it with a softer touch now. It\u2019s one of those projects I hope is in my biography as a whole eight chapters. Every time I listen to these songs, it reminds me of the cozy, nostalgic country I grew up on where I felt really safe and at home even though we are expressing so much activism and humor and pain and life. But I\u2019ve seen more people, more children\u2019s choirs sing \u201cCrowded Table.\u201d Lots of churches, lots of people singing it at their graduations. That is success, that is how you have staying power. Yes, I want more women on radio, but it goes beyond that. It has to be good songs. It has to be great music. It\u2019s got to be the right time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile: <\/strong>We didn\u2019t come through and say, \u201cPlay us just because we\u2019re four women.\u201d It was, \u201cTry and deny this album.\u201d It\u2019s going to stand the test of time and it\u2019s easily one of the greatest projects I\u2019ve ever been a part of. It\u2019s the things that we\u2019ve lived. We\u2019ve lived through our fathers passing away. We\u2019ve lived through being a mom who doesn\u2019t want to get up in the morning, and wants to go out on the road. We\u2019ve been through all kinds of things. I think that\u2019s why it spoke to a lot of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Carlile:<\/strong> And we have a lot to say again. My life is really different. Everyone\u2019s a little gayer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Speaking of\u2026Maren, you\u2019ve come out since the album was first released.
