NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Peabo Bryson, the two-time Grammy Award-winning R&B singer<\/a> best known as the voice behind the Oscar-winning Disney film duets \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d with Celine Dion and \u201cA Whole New World\u201d with Regina Belle from \u201cAladdin,\u201d has died. He was 75.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His family said in a statement that Bryson died Tuesday evening, days after having a stroke.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhile our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and his generous spirit,\u201d the family\u2019s statement said. \u201cHis legacy and music will live on for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Internationally celebrated for his Disney classics, Bryson also built a career over five decades as one of R&B\u2019s premier balladeers, recording hits including \u201cFeel the Fire,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m So Into You\u201d and \u201cCan You Stop the Rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cFor more than five decades, Peabo\u2019s extraordinary voice served as the soundtrack to some of life\u2019s most cherished moments,\u201d the family\u2019s statement said. \u201cHis music carried generations through joyful celebrations, great love stories and enduring moments of comfort and inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Born and raised in South Carolina, the singer, songwriter and balladeer launched his career with the group Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display in the 1970s. Shortly afterward, Atlanta label Bang Records signed him as a solo artist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He recorded for Capitol, Elektra and Columbia Records and became one of music\u2019s most sought-after duet partners. Aside from Belle and Dion, he also collaborated with artists including Roberta Flack and Natalie Cole.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His duet with Flack, \u201cTonight, I Celebrate My Love,\u201d became one of the defining love songs of the 1980s, while \u201cIf Ever You\u2019re in My Arms Again\u201d helped expand his audience beyond R&B radio. He later scored No. 1 R&B hits with \u201cShow & Tell\u201d and \u201cCan You Stop the Rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Beyond music, Bryson appeared in stage productions including \u201cRaisin,\u201d \u201cThe Wiz\u201d and \u201cPorgy and Bess.\u201d In 2018, he returned with \u201cStand for Love,\u201d his 21st studio album, produced by hitmaking duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bryson had a stroke in late May and was placed under medical care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAt this time, the family requests privacy as they navigate this deeply personal moment together,\u201d a statement from his representative read at the time. \u201cThe thoughts, prayers and love of friends and fans are welcomed and deeply appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2019, Bryson made a full recovery after having a heart attack.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Comedian and television host Loni Love said she worked with Bryson on a cruise ship last year and spoke with him for hours on the deck one night after she noticed him sitting alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe shared incredible stories, spoke passionately about his music, and had such a deep love for his craft,\u201d she wrote in a social media post Tuesday. \u201cI am so grateful to have had that special moment with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Bryson\u2019s family said memorial and celebration-of-life arrangements will be announced at a later date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
